Some days, you realize that your entire life would go better if you were just a Mr. Potato Head.

Other days you realize that YOU ARE a Mr. Potato Head. And honestly? I think that's OK, too.

We wanted a hero, but instead we got a person. A dumb idiot, in a lot of cases, but a person nonetheless. The story probably would have been more interesting for having been about a wonder child, but the difference between a prodigy and a regular kid is often down to the circumstances they find themselves in.

Ergo, Mr. Potato Head is indeed the hero we want, need and perhaps in many cases, deserve. We can aspire to be Mr. Potato Head, whereas a super Harry would be beyond our grasp. Both have their merits.

Also, in book one they are Cildren and pretty much nothing happens, you could replace pretty much every Character from the book with a toy and nothing would change (including Hermione, Ron, Snape and even qirrel as long as the toy is a little car in which Voldemort could drive around).

As far I know Harry isnt a Hero with capital H, he is consider one in virtue of being the main character of the series, this kind of heros dont initiates actions, they respond to the obstacles and complications they encounter, most of it is imposed by the antagonist.

In the end, you are right, he isnt heroic, he is just Harry.

Maybe that's why we write fanfiction? We want him to be a hero, a villain, neutral, just something, so we take him and make him react. Make him more then a passive boy that goes with the flow, though if we look into it, could that be what Dumbledore wanted? A passive doll to throw into these adventures, to throw in front of Tom Riddle.
Honestly, Hermione reacts more then Harry, researching and trying to figure stuff out after Harry stumbles upon them.
