I love the concept of Vulcan as a language, and how it reflects Vulcan as a culture. I also love when you don't assume the role of an standard speaker and show how imprecise a language English can be, especially when emotional intonation is stripped away.

I also chuckled at Spock's teasing of Nyota. Just a glimpse between the curtain behind his eyes is always enjoyable.

You nailed TOS McCoy so well, even down to his getting angry at Spock for things he doesn't understand. If he would just logically and reasonably ask a question instead of getting all - Sorry, lol I'm getting off topic.

I felt for Spock, I really did. He couldn't stand by and let the animal suffer, not when it was in his power to end it. I also understand his reluctance. If he had not put the animal out if its misery it would've died a painful death before the Enterprise could get to them. Not a fitting end for a creature that gave its life for them.

Your story is a heartbreaker. Spock' s cold, cold eyes afterwards were perfect.

Sometimes the only thing we can do for our animal friends is to help them through the "gate". I held my dying dog while the vet ended her misery (and her life) After reading your story, I cried again for all my departed animal friends. And my cat's many mangled victims whose pain I had to end.
