Oh *sniffle* yes. This, exactly! I'm so glad you made the distinction between Sam going to Hell and Sam being in Lucifer's cage, because a lot of writers haven't and there's a very big difference.

I can't quite reconcile myself with the idea of Sam staying away from Dean on purpose for a year, leaving Dean to think he's dead and suffering, so I like that idea that Sam doesn't really know how long it's been, and that he comes back because he misses his brother, not because he feels he needs him to start hunting again.
