Lovely and gentle - "did she not understand how much it pained him to be that... nice?)" made me laugh, and your writing of them both is very sensitive, with Gene discovering that Alex was orphaned young and loving her happiness in the meteor shower, and Alex's simple decision to buy some pyjamas showing beginning to accept that she is staying. And in retrospect, for her to be taking pleasure in the stars, when we know what connatation stars will have in S3, is just so poignant.
