Reviews for The Ocean
NijiBrush chapter 1 . 11/21/2012
You captured the feeling of both this movie and life, in this beautiful little story.
Lost Tide and Sea Shells chapter 1 . 2/27/2012
Awesome job Heartfelt, slow, sad, really captures the sense of the movie for me. Brilliant take on the characters and theme. Love this piece!
Kaj-Nrig chapter 1 . 7/6/2011
I always consider it a treat to read good fanfiction, and more so when it's from this particular fandom. Your story carries the same echoing melancholy throughout it that the movie does, and I can't help but feel that much more strongly for the characters therein because of it.

In my opinion, Shinkai's best works are his short stories (thus excluding Place Promised In Our Early Days), and they almost fall into that echelon of great storytelling that actively denies any fanfiction, if you get what I mean. In other words, it's almost so good that people can't write fanfiction to match, and most shouldn't even try.

To take a specific example, the character of Sumida gets a mere 15 minutes of screen time, and she absolutely captures everything she needs to. She's a bit forgettable by herself, but so are the other characters, and that's largely the point. Any more focus than that, either in animation or in text, would diminish her impact on the story.

That said, this piece is one of only a few works of 5CM fanfiction that effectively translates Shinkai's characters, world, and emotional catharses into text form. It's a wonderful focus on a subtle and gentle subject, and I loved it. Great job.
Captain Arbitrary chapter 1 . 4/5/2011
I really liked this one shot. Tohno's time in Kagoshima was my favorite part of the movie and I've always felt for Sumida-san... Even though Akari's his true love, I had always kinda hoped it would have worked out between them. Anyways, I think you captured them both extremely well, so good job on this! :)
fallenmad chapter 1 . 8/26/2010
Awww... somehow it capture a moment just like in the movie. It was flowing slowly, slowly, it rumbles, then it fades. I ache for Kanae. Nicely done!
