Diurnal Days chapter 1 . 12/28/2015 I think might've eaten my last review (which is a shame, since I spent a long time on that one), so I'll just give a (slightly) shorter version. Despite this fic being very much literal, I also found a lot of symbolism in it. For example, England holding his hand out to America on the sun-dressed steps of the Lincoln Memorial was full of poignant symbolism, at least to this reader. I found this to be very interesting. The historical references in this fic are masterful, as usual for your writing style. I learned a lot from the footnotes at the end of each chapter. In part thanks to you, I've grown into a history fanatic who devours everything and anything related to World War II. Really, there needs to be more material covering the more obscure aspects of that war, in my opinion. I found this fic to be very emotionally bittersweet, gritty, and hopeful, all at the same time. The ending made me tear up - it was so beautiful that I could really imagine England's deep-seated and admiring love for America. Not even 35,856 words could convey how much this fic affected me emotionally. The switches between styles and POVs was jarring at first, but it helped me slow down at the beginning of each segment and really absorb what was going on. And this was a new experience for me, mind. As a speed reader who reads seventy pages in as many minutes for the heck of it, this was a refreshing change of pace from my usual "GOTTA GO FAST" reading speed. I would say more, but words, pictures, and sounds do not - and can not - express how much I love this fic, your fics, and your style in general. If you wrote an original novel, I would buy it up in spades, no matter how different the subject matter from your usual fare. If you wrote a story about two pretty pink unicorns dancing the polka over a neon rainbow, I'd still read that. XD Here's to many a beautiful masterpiece yet to come from your pen (or keyboard, maybe?), RobinRocks. And a Happy New Year to you too! |
Diurnal Days chapter 1 . 12/28/2015 I might sound a tad ditzy in my other reviews, but, I swear, I do enjoy the intricate meaning woven into your fanfiction. Your talent is unrivaled by any other Hetalia writer whose fics I've ever read. The way you mix melodramatic and dark themes with more hopeful ones in your fiction is truly masterful. Now, while this was a very literal fic (America's wings, England literally rotting from the inside, America cumming gold into England's mouth and filling his belly with it), there was also some heavy symbolism that I picked up on. Such as England clipping America's wings to prevent his escape, England holding his hand out for America on the sun-dressed steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and the like. Also, the historical references here were very masterfully mixed. The mixture of different POVs and styles was a bit jarring at first, bur it also helped me slow down at the beginning of each section and really think about what was happening. That was a very new experience for me, as a speed-reader who reads seventy pages in as many minutes just for the heck of it. Also, the footnotes at the end of every chapter helped me learn something new. In part, thanks to you, I've kindled a new interest in everything about history. ;) The last chapter almost brought me to tears. It was that beautiful, sad, and yet so very hopeful, all at the same time. Just like in some of of your other masterpieces, America and England both feel so very raw in this fic. I could really imagine them as real national personfications, their every heartbeat thrumming within the words that chronicled their ugly, beautiful, wretched souls. Kudos to you for making me feel so immersed in a world and history that is mine and yet not mine at the same time. And, let me say what everyone has said already: How do you write the Cold War so well?! |
Guest chapter 8 . 3/16/2015 Forgive the late review, but I just read all of this and it's truly incredible. Very well done. Extremely well-written, and the history was top-notch. Thanks for sharing. |
CaiaNadiya chapter 8 . 11/6/2014 When I get around to studying American History, I'll probably look to your fic. :) |
CharliPetidei chapter 8 . 8/20/2014 Wow. Wow wow. An amazing story here - so gritty and thought-provoking... I love the way you've gone through their history... Really great - and you have an awesome writing style too :) Love this fix! |

nobody chapter 2 . 9/9/2013 The war of 1812 was a tie, proven by the fact that nobody gained anything from it. |
argella1300 chapter 7 . 6/20/2013 Actually, the 50 on his jacket might not be referring to the states. It might be referring to flight missions in battle. As an airforce pilot, a full tour of duty is 25 missions. Being a pilot is super dangerous, in WWII, I think something like 6 out of every 10 died in action. Anyways, the point is that the 50 on Al's jacket might actually be a reference to the two tours of duty as a pilot that he completed, a huge accomplishment for a pilot. |
Torn chapter 8 . 6/4/2013 I hate the America here very much. A lot more than England. I think the main reason is that he never, ever acknowledges those terrible things that he did. You can sense regret, remorse and contemplation radiating from England, but never from your America. He did all those awful things in chapter 5 but never acknowledges it himself. He just turns around and all is well and dandy and he's an angel again. Se-fucking-riously. He's only excuse (never voice out loud but it permeates the text) is probably "Oh England was worse". I fucking hate that attitude. No traces of self-examination. At all. I know England is greedy, selfish, warmongering, ruthless, and all that. But he fucking acknowledges it and knows what he did was terrible. He remembers his history. He's actually aspiring to be better afterwards, though he never shouts about it. But America, never does. The things he did in the past simply fades and he's a perfect again. Fuck THAT. I am sorry I cursed so many times here, but your America aroused such strong emotion in me. You are a brilliant writer, but I hate the America in this fic. |
chibinekogirl101 chapter 1 . 4/6/2013 I love this fanfic :3 |
yankinblue chapter 8 . 1/29/2013 I may be a little late on the review, but this was absolutely amazing. I am in love with this fanfiction and your writing. Fantastic job! |
PT-chan ssu chapter 8 . 1/9/2013 I feel mesmerized. Your naration just has this air of hypnotic beauty that leaves me dazed as I read. You gave America wings; A first and beautiful concept. England being cruel in the first few chapters then suddenly flipping to America being cruel in the middle is kinda breathtaking in a way. The ending of chap 5 left me hanging though. And really, just switch chapter 6 and 7 and this fic would have been flawless. The ending was... wow. In all actuality I really wasn't planning on giving a review and just fav this, considering this fic has me speechless... but I had to leave one if just to tell you this. *dazed* |
Freed from Greed chapter 8 . 12/24/2012 This is an amazing, just beautifully written compilation of U.S. history in a personified form. Hats off to you, wonderful job, Author. |
