Allen never had a dog. The dog you mentioned is Allen, the original Allen. Allen was named after the dog when Mana took him in. Before that he was the nameless orphan Red (after his hair colour) who was forced to work in the circus to survive. Allen was Mana's dog who Red took a liking to but the circus owner beat him to death. It isn't really that clear in the anime but it's really well explained in the was never right in the head but Allen ignored all that because he was the first person to ever be nice to him.
