Grignard chapter 1 . 12/2/2010
Love your name, by the way. I thought this was a very good story with wonderful emotional description. You described the thoughts of Peter and Edmund well, and let them remain in character. The sibling bonds and reliance on each other were portrayed beautifully. The dialogue between Peter and Adeleide, along with the ending, was very abrupt, and I thought that detracted from the story. Warfare was part of the Edmund and Peter's territory, if I recall correctly from the book, but yes, they didn't enjoy it. However, your story ended on a hopeful note, which works. I don't hate Adelaide McRyan, I pity her. She has surrendered to hate & it seems to have consumed her. As far as the British peoples' reactions to the Japanise role in WW2, they weren't alone by a long shot. As an example, both the US and Canada were guilty of the forced relocation of native-born citizens of Japanese descent from the West coast of both countries, and both nations' actions were the result of the governments pandering to fear and bigotry. It's one of the few things I am very, very disappointed in FDR for.

Oh, by the way, a very nicely written one-shot. It is one of my favourites.

Autumnia chapter 1 . 4/10/2010
Adelaide is certainly an interesting woman; for all the experiences that the Pevensies have had in Narnia, it's creepy to find that she gives off such a bad aura to all of them. She reminds me a lot of Jadis, and how she uses her 'charm' on those she has a use for.

I do feel bad for Mrs. Pevensie; her loneliness during the war has made her desperate to invite this woman over. And when her children came back after the evacuation, even she could see the change in them and realized they didn't need her as they used to. Even so, her children are still there for her even if they could do nothing but pretend interest in Adelaide just to please their mother.

And as for war, well, after all the Kings and Queens have seen, they understand a lot more about both sides and know that things aren't black and white. Peter answers as truthfully as he could, even if neither his mother nor Adelaide understood; all that mattered was for his siblings to know and understand.
Lirenel chapter 1 . 4/8/2010
Interesting story. Adelaide is intriguing, like there's something more to her than just a gossip. My only thought is that I see Edmund's repentance as him making the choice to turn away from evil. Just as the Japanese (and the Germans and the English and everyone else in the world) had to make their choice either to do evil or turn from it. One of the big things that came out of WWII was that you didn't get a pass on being guilty just because you were 'following orders' or 'fighting for your country'; they didn't excuse the concentration camp guards from complicity in the Holocaust. And while the natives of Japan as a whole weren't guilty of atrocities, that doesn't excuse the soldiers who raped Nanking or burned POWs alive after torturing them. Edmund was still guilty, even though he turned away from evil. It took Aslan's sacrifice to save him, not just repentance.

Still, I see where you came from in Peter's view. And I agree that people deserve a second chance. But they have to choose to take that chance.

Sorry for the length. I'm a bit of a WWII history buff and I think I've read a bit too much on the Holocaust and the atrocities the Japanese army committed to be completely unbiased. You did a good job with the story, though, and I like your examination of Peter's character, his relationship with his siblings, and his relationship with his mother. I particularly liked the flashback scenes. Very well done.

Belle of Books chapter 1 . 4/8/2010
Can I just tell you how much I love you? You write the best stuff. You completely hit the nail on the head with this one. You know I love Ed/Peter stuff and the relationship and Ed is here in all of a simple yet powerful statement. Really well done! I loved it. I always enjoy reading about the Pevensies after they've returned home. Thanks!
