This is awesome! I can't believe I haven't found this little gem before, but I'm glad I have. The imagery is amazing, and I love and truly believe in your characterization of John- I especially love that you tied his military background into the mix, and how that would give him flashbacks in a situation like this.
I guess in this fic you're operating under the premise that Dean stayed in the past when he traveled back? That would be the only thing that really makes sense. And even though when he traveled back in 4x03 he called himself Dean Van Halen, this could be under different circumstances I guess?

Interesting story. The way you wrote this I can see why Sam thought that just because he quit being a Hunter nothing supernatural will get him. An out of sight out of mind thing. Plus, he was like his mom in thinking it was alright to lie about how he was raised and all.
I'm saddened that there was not an explanation on why Dean is back in the past calling himself Jimmy Hendrix, I'd love to know the hows and whys of it. I'm a little disappointed that Mary was so hysterical and ineffective, I know, I know, hormones and pregnancy. But then, once I found out that Mary had not only been a Hunter and made a deal with a demon, I was disappointed in her actions or rather inaction (?).
I would love to read more of this story to find out if Jimmy survives surgery. If Mary finds and kills the Black Dog herself or contacts another Hunter to do so. Afterall, even though she cut herself out of her past life, she should know other Hunters that could take care of business. It would also be interesting to have her tell her husband the truth about herself. Or, it would be even more interesting to have Jimmy survive and continue to watch over his family from his POV. I just know that the reasons Dean is in the past has to be a good one, especially since he is not with Sam. Thank you for sharing this story, I hope there will be more of it as it is so good.
