Brilliantly written - one might expect Gene to compare and contrast Alex with Sam, but his analysis of the differences between the two of them is full of insight (including the fact that Alex can hold a civil conversation with Ray, and Sam never could). The revelation is that Alex is, in so many ways, like Gene - and that, like ot or not, she is a good influence on him. Marvellous.
