I joined the USN in 1981 but was injured during Recruit Training and they jettisoned me without a 'parachute'. :( I'm still a hardcore Navy supporter and only wish that I could have continued to serve my Country!

THANK YOU for seeing Severus as I interpreted him to be: A pawn caught between two manipulative, hateful megalomaniacs!
I also didn't buy into Rowling's psycho-babble about how Snape came to be such an embittered, bullying bastard. The psychology of the abused and bullied *child* doesn't match the adult character: An adult bully is born of the overindulged child who has never faced true consequences for his/her actions and has never learned to have compassion and/or empathy for others outside of themselves. Whereas 9 times out of 10, the abused and bullied child will become seemingly empathic and at times *overly* attuned to emotional atmospheric changes and pressures, but because of ingrained low self-esteem issues and poorly developed "social clue" interpretation, they will find it difficult to tell if the change in mood or social dynamics is directed *towards* them or something else entirely!
My point is that the adult Severus' behavior would fit better if he'd come from a background such as a "James Potter" or "Dudley Dursley" and had been thwarted in some way: i.e. denied the Apprenticeship that he needed to further his aspirations; being thrown into poverty due to the loss of family and/or inheritance, or being spurned by the 'love interest' that he considered his due.
Rowling's miss-mash of mis-matched backgrounds is nothing compared to her pushing forward her agenda of 'nature vs nurture' and upbringing stereotypes!
