Thanks for a great story. You capture the characters well - even James, given the fannon we have (yes, I too love Barty's work). Somehow I doubt that 19th century scarves were tightly enough woven to filter out aerosolized anesthetics (it works for dust because dust particles are generally bigger and clumpy, and it doesn't matter if a little gets through). The main content of the story, however, was engaging and a lot of fun. Thanks again.

I see that I am thinking parallel to Holmes and Watson here about the seaports G. I like Lestrade here; he seems far more competent than in some portrayals, but then he does run Scotland Yard.

Personally, I would offer James to a ship on its way to India who needed an extra crewman, but apparently John is nicer than that G. Good action sequence, quite clear what was going on. I wish both Holmes and Watson luck resolving James Watson's little problems.

It's clear that James Watson is way out of his league, and it's surprising he's lasted this long, really. If you work so hard at hacking people off, eventually they all discover who they're mad at, and combine to take care of someone like that.

I don't know why these two even try to fool each other-it's clear they've been associated long enough to figure each other out pretty well. I don't think Holmes will be terribly surprised when he discovers he's being followed later on G.

I would worry more about John Watson and his dealings with his brother, were it not for the dictum from Terry Pratchett that good men were more to be feared than evil ones. Not to mention the old saying about 'shooting your own dog'. James Watson isn't smart enough to be worried about his brother, but he should be.

Besides, I expect Sherlock could figure out something both creative and effective if John's plans should fail.

Mycroft is probably kicking himself that James Watson wasn't quietly er, disposed of (can you say 'adjusting his medication'? I thought you could), though really, John would have drawn the line at that.

But Sherlock clearly understands the stakes, the method, and the rationale behind his brother's actions, though.

I expect this would be a good time for Mrs. Hudson to establish a code word or some such, so she doesn't foolishly confuse the two brothers again. I can see that she would be able to punctuate her attitude with her broom if she had to, though!

Holmes' point of view on James Watson was indeed welcome, as was his assistance at the end of the meeting.

But I'm sure Sherlock knows that a real confrontation has only been put off for later.

That Mr Holmes the senior had been unable to keep James confined did not surprise me.

-It did me. You would think that someone who could manage Bismarck would be able to deal with a civilian montebank of James Watson's stripe; but perhaps Mycroft underestimated him. Pity.

Lovely chapter! Holmes didn't take very long to figure James Watson out, that's for sure. Looking forward to the upcoming explosion. James should remember that his brother _was_ in Afghanistan, and is tougher than he looks (plus, as a doctor, has access to medical instruments and dangerous drugs).
