Concrit: You switched tense near the beginning - She’ll be furious, he knew. Shouldn't it be 'he knows'?

Hmm...good so far.

I have a suggestion: why not have Haymitch reflect on Maysilee Donner, the other tribute from District 12 that was his partner in his Hunger Games?

(I have a sneaking suspicion that Haymitch was in love with Maysilee before she died, much like Peeta is with Katniss, and that is how he came up with the idea to have Peeta annoucne he was in love with Katniss in the seventy-fourth Hunger Games...and well as why he drinks so much, to forget.)

Ex. there is some proof... after they announce the Quarter Quell in Catching Fire, there is a part where Katniss sees Haymitch's eyes fill with "pain" over some distant memory. Maybe recalling Maysilee's sacrifice so that he could win his Games and how Katniss wants to similarily sacrifice herself for Peeta?
