Sad, tragic, grim, yet terrifyingly plausible given how teenage Japanese boys tend to be (and I should know, since I'm a teenage Japanese boy). The whole premise was well written and I liked the allusion to the original Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson. However, I'm actually surprised that Ponyo and Sosuke would forget about the things that they went through, considering that I can still remember a lot of the things I did when I was 5 (though there's also a lot I don't remember). But even if Sosuke and Ponyo forget, wouldn't Sosuke's mother remind them that they were betrothed to each other (Japanese mothers tend to be overbearing in how they always remind their kids of certain things)?
Still, this was a great fic and I gotta give you bonus points for actually making the characters believable; too many Ghibli fanfics I've read have Japanese characters acting in a way that's completely nonsensical in Japan yet your characterization is actually quite accurate.
