Beautifully written. It's succinct but it's a great character study. You manage to capture all the undercurrents behind their words and their actions perfectly.

Oh that was SUCH a fantastic read! My favorite line was this (and I literally SQUEE'd out loud):

"The grin vanished and he was looking up at her with equal gravity, his voice quiet and even, private and warm. “What you say is important to me, too, Ran Fan.” "

I know the ending could be open to interpretation but what exactly were you planning to go with it? :)
