In the original series, Uhura,in the beginning, didn't even like Spock. Also, she did sing, sometimes to her detriment. ("The Changeling"' "Charlie X") Only in this backward universe that this movie created would this conversation take place.

Haha! I enjoyed this with mixed emotions. Sassy, I like-bitchy-not so much. I don't think they quite found that balance in the new film but I appreciate the attempt to give her a bit of definition. The Spock thing threw me. I was looking at the screen all cross eyed, tilting my head at odd angles going "really?" trying to see what, apparently, the rest of the world had seen that I had missed.

Nyota is in a predominantly male workplace and I expect romance but I'd like to see her independent actions before defining her. As she walks into the bar she greets many present so she's popular and she was spending her free time monitoring subspace frequencies so she's a workaholic. I want to no more.

Hah!I got on this! I just have to comment on your fanfic, its true what they did with Uhura was a little odd. Her and Spock? How'd they come up with that? If I remember correctly, he hardly paid attention to her in TOS, and he was into Chapel. But I was happy that Uhura had SOMEONE at least, and the movie pairing was cute. Totally bummed that Chapel wasn't there though! But I LOVED the movie. Saw it three times before I decided to give it a rest. WOW.

I had the same thought as you did with the new Uhura, I LOVED her in TOS. I felt like she was lacking something in the new ST film, an inner fire perhaps. I didn't like the romance between Spock and her, but that didn't mean I dislike her because she was romantically linked. Nope, not at all. However, I felt the scene between them was uncomfortable (maybe JJ wanted that atmosphere I'm not sure), it didn't fit to me, I felt it was just placed there. I preferred their energy in TOS, cheeky and flirtatious. I wished the writers could have made Uhura far stronger, more interesting, quickwitted (as brilliant as she was in TOS). But it's a film, a different process to a television show. There was meant to me more of Chapel in the first film, but she was cut from the story. Fingers crossed for the next one, I hope Uhura has a central based scene, no Kirk, no Spock, just her. Also communicating with the other amazing characters that never get a chance.

When my brother and his wife saw the movie they felt the same way you do. This saddened me. In TOS you had this beautiful woman surrounded by single men and she sat alone and never married, just had her career. As the men lived full, happy lives, dating and marring whom they pleased.

Was she too ugly to love? No, she was beautiful. Did he have an unapproachable attitude? No, she had many, many friends. Okay, she couldn't hold a conversation? Wait, she a communications officer. Well, what would make a ship full of men stay away from one of the most beautiful women on board? Oh, yes – the Ass Backwards Racist Network People of the 1960’s.

So, what you are saying is, You would rather her be alone for the rest of her life than to be with the hottest man on the ship? Okay, but just for the record, I know lots of women who are “kind, strong, intelligent, caring, independent, and talented” and also dating and/ or married.

I may not agree with your feelings about the “new” Uhura but damn it, at least she is being talked about and not just a lonely glorified operator.

I genuinely hope that if anyone finds this story upsetting, it is because they are attempting to defend Uhura's image as a strong woman, and not because the reviewer ships Spock/Uhura.

I myself halfway agree with this, and I've discussed this topic numerous times. During the first half of the film, Uhura is a strong woman. She's able to hold her own during fights, she knows how to say 'no' to flirting men, and she knows how to get what she deserves (although I would love to see her personally explain to the crew of the Farragut as to why she does not want to be on their ship). However, that is the first half of the. By the second half of the film she basically leaves our radar. She says a few lines about Romulans, and is not seen again or focused on unless she is hanging from Spock's neck. I am aware of the fact that the film is more about Spock and Kirk becoming friends than it is about establishing the crew-at least, for now. However, as a woman I found this to be somewhat offensive. Can't a female crew member hold her own without having to be attached to a male character? I definitely enjoyed Uhura's character, especially during the first half of the film. I only hope that in the second film she is allowed to hold her own without needing to be attached to a male lead.

A lot of people argue that the same thing happens to Bones- that he is shunned during the second half of the film, and I can agree with this to an extent. I also hope that Bones can hold his own without needing to remain just "Kirk's doctor buddy".

Overall, I found this story to be all in fun, and should in no way, shape, or form, cause deep distress on anyone's behalf. If anyone is deeply offended by this, there must be something a bit fishy going on. It's a (funny) crack story, people. It's not Shakespeare (that was for you, arty ;) ).

Really? I would love for you to explain why you feel this way.

She was a character that was completely underrepresented in the past Star Trek movies and in the original tv show.

If you did not like the way that she was portrayed then you should not like at all how Kirk and Bones are portrayed in the new film.

Your view of her calling herself a "bitch" is rather sexist and trite.

Now I know that you write a disclaimer of sorts saying that you are not bashing Nyota but that is akin to saying that I don't really hate (insert subject here) and then proceed to write a story stating that you do hate said subject. You cannot have it both ways.

If you interpret Nyota as being a bitch, (why I do not understand how you can see or say that) then Kirk as he is portrayed in the film is a bitch too, actually he is more of one than anyone in the film. He cheats on tests, sleeps around, does what he wants to get what he wants, sulks to get McCoy to get him on the Enterprise, eggs on insubordination, says horrid things to get what he wants, NEVER says sorry and gets rewarded.

So please enlighten me as to why you think that Nyota was a bitch and was misrepresented in the film? Is in because she is in a loving relationship with Spock, because she tells him that she should be on the Enterprise because she is outstanding in her expertise,(it was he who was playing the protective boyfriend because he did not want it to look like favouritism because of his relationship with Nyota), or is it because she goes to comfort the man she loves and who loves her when his home planet is destroyed? What is bitch like about any of that? Because if you are thinking that she should be like her 1960's counterpart and just answer hailing frequencies, sing once in awhile and be completely sexless then I think that you will continue to be disappointed. There is no going back only forward.

This is long but I had to respond to what you wrote in your disclaimer and story and what you said and did not say because your lack of argument and stating why you feel this way about Nyota (a character whom you feel is awesome) is rather alarming to me and has a deeper resonance than you are stating.
