Reviews for A Father's Duty
cfruge444 chapter 1 . 6/10/2018
Having skimmed the reviews of this slap in the face (Never seen it, but followed this one guy on DeviantArt - who I don't know what his current account's username is - and Ponyo was one of his favorite Ghibli movies.), not only do I agree with Martial Arts Master emphatically, but to everyone who compares Ponyo to The Little Mermaid, that's like comparing apples to oranges.
Umiki chapter 1 . 2/20/2017
Frankly, when I watched the movie I thought Granmmare was jumping the gun about the love test. Ignoring that this movie was "made for five-year olds" in Miyazaki-san's words, none of the adults should have expected anything good of using that test; especially Lisa who knew from experience the ups and downs of love. Only Fujimoto had obvious doubts due to his past life as a human and was soundly ignored by everyone about it. If a different test had been used or having them do the test in ten years would have been better; but the movie didn't give us that chance.
You showed us the very glaring weakness of the love test: that the innocent love of a child is not the same as the love that would grant gods the choice to become human or vice versa. It's powerful in its own right, sweet Kami is it powerful, but it is NOT the same.
And poor Ponyo learned that the hard way.
Ruler of the world chapter 1 . 10/31/2015
And then Ponyo turms into sea foam and dies! The end! You can all go home now!
Guest chapter 1 . 6/25/2015
I agree with
you- the demigod
StarBlazer124 chapter 1 . 7/19/2014
Finally! Others who agree! Most of the people I talk to about this movie say that they liked the ending, but I felt like it was so odd and unbelievable. I mean, people keep comparing the movie to The Little Mermaid, but she was 16 in that movie! She could fully understand the consequences of her decision. Ponyo making the same decision at the age of 5 seems ridiculous. Oh well. At least it gives fans opportunities to write their own endings. Great job on your work! It was flawless!
DisneyFan1787 chapter 1 . 6/19/2014
I can respect your opinion on the matter considering I agree that kids think they understand love way too early in life; however, don't you think you are putting a little too much thought into a children's movie? It is just supposed to be a cute storyline.
loveghibli chapter 1 . 11/23/2013
True respect your father
Niki Maweird chapter 1 . 7/24/2013
Finally someone who shares my opinion! I mean, Sosuke and Ponyo are only little children. How can they possibly know what's real love and how to deal with it. Fujimoto really seems to be the only one in the film who actually sees this point. Goodness...I feel so sorry for him.
loveghibli chapter 1 . 7/8/2013
It's true you have the same view on stuff like this as my dad, say you have just watched romeo and julliet, you would say ''every thing would have been all right if she had just listened to her parents''
Jenna chapter 1 . 2/26/2013
This was so sweet! loved it, very in character :D especially loved the ending
MagicMaxxy chapter 1 . 6/17/2012
Love it. Wish it was longer tho.
FreakieGeekie chapter 1 . 1/23/2012
I love this and think you wrote Fujimoto very in character.

I adored Ponyo but, like you, I couldn't help thinking "What happens when they grow up?"

I sympathized with poor Fujimoto throughout the entire movie. I mean he was only trying to protect his daughter, and the whole world while he was at it!
Nina feliz chapter 1 . 1/19/2012
I love this!

I totally see your point! But I try to see it from the "magic" logic of the movie... so I do think your fic more probable but I like to see it in a "hey! is about magic, maybe they could be in love for ever andHow am I kidding! Those two does not have future "

Love your fic :D!
Daelyah the Dark Rose chapter 1 . 10/17/2011
I can understand the viewpoint, actually.

It is rather sad, but at the same time the concept is a bit more realistic than what the film depicted.

Still, it was supposed to be a simple kids' movie; children that watch the film will see what they see, but most people that are more world-weary (like you and I) are more prone to understand what could actually happen.

I'm neutral, here, for I do prefer happy endings; but I also don't mind a bit of philosophy every once in a while, even on a fanfic site.
Happy-Helper chapter 1 . 8/14/2011
I very much love the the thought into this. I would love for this to be a full on story though if you ever feel like it. :)
