Okay, this has very little to do with the story (which seems promising), but I just realized something while reading the Naruto manga for the first time.

Not only that, but he could do the transformation jutsu extremely well, even though they seem like related techniques.

Well, it just occurred to me that before that trip in the woods, Naruto most definitely hated HIMSELF. Why, then, would he be able to make an image of himself if he did not even like himself. Only after he started believing in himself did it work.
