Goldgun11304 chapter 1 . 10/20/2016 Dobe means "Loser" "dead last" "moron", that type of stuff. |
Guest chapter 1 . 2/6/2016 Dobe is dead last or an idiot. |
gaytard6969 chapter 1 . 1/19/2012 I really liked this! Dobe means dumb I think, and in the anime that's what Sasuke calls Naruto. Awesome story! |
narutofan chapter 1 . 7/5/2011 Great story, at the end I was practical sitting on the edge of my chair :) I think that the part in the middle about Naruto was a little boring, maybe it would have been an idea to skip or at least make it a smaller part of the story? But it is a really great story in the end, as said the end was really good and I really think that you are a great writer :) Keep the good work up, and I would love a little sequel to this story :) |
alexa-catta123 chapter 1 . 7/21/2009 Either way still a nice story! So are you going to write a sequel? really neat though, especially how Naruto and Sasuke have changed positions in the eyes of the village and shinobe. - |
remy-areyousrs chapter 1 . 7/21/2009 i loved it! Keep up the good work! But Kakashi shouldn'ta died! ciao |
Big Paja chapter 1 . 7/16/2009 Dobe - This term means "the person with the lowest score" or "the person who is the very last one" or simply "the worst one in something". It does not mean "idiot", though the meaning can be extended that way because the last one can be an idiot. Watch episode 3 of Naruto (Sasuke and Sakura: Friends or Foes?) and check the scene when Naruto complains to Iruka about being in the same squad as Sasuke. Iruka tells Naruto that Sasuke was actually the best one in class with the highest scores and then adds "Naruto, omea wa dobe.", meaning "Naruto, Your scores were the lowest." It can be used as a noun (because it is) or as a kind of nickname for Naruto (because Naruto really WAS the dobe) but it should be used only in the context of Part I (before the time-skip) and by people who know Naruto and do not like him very much (like Sasuke). Teme - That does not directly mean "bastard"; that is the same fandom misconception like "dobe" meaning "idiot". "Teme" is actually a very rude way of saying "you". There are many ways of saying "you" in Japanese: omae, anata, anta, kisama, teme and there may be others I am not familiar with or cannot remember right now. You pick one of those "you's" to address a person with a certain degree of respect, in/formality or even disdain - "teme" is used for that disdain. It cannot be directly translated because the English language does not have variants of "you" - "thou" is only an archaic way of saying "you", not a respectful one. Therefore, while "bastard" is a pretty accurate way of rephrasing "teme", it is not a translation, so "teme" cannot be used as a pronoun or a noun in English like many fan-fiction writers mistakenly do. For example, Naruto says something like "I hate that teme." or "If only that teme did not stand in my way of winning Sakura-chan's heart." - those are fundamentally wrong. I am not sure about the usage of "teme" as a suffix like "-kun", "-chan", "-sama", etc., but I think that one is also wrong and just a fan creation. Nonetheless, You can still use "teme" when it is separated, like the simple exclamation "Teme!" As for the actual review, here goes: How You tried to keep us in suspense over who is the person slowly trudging along the road - it was in vain. It was painfully obvious from the story's summary who it would be so You could have spared Yourself the effort and simply called him Sasuke right away. You were a little more successful with Naruto being Hokage but, conversely, because You tried with Sasuke, You should have put more effort into this part. Once You mentioned the hair colour, the cat was out of the bag and any doubt whether the Hokage was Naruto or Kakashi or Shikamaru (the "tired response" would suggest one of those two) or anyone else were dispelled. Gamakichi is no longer a small, regular-sized toad. Both he and Gamatatsu are bigger than Naruto in Part II and I do not think they are capable of shrinking themselves. I guess You just wanted a familiar name but "creating" Your own summoned toad would work just as well or even better, considering the discrepancy in size. Do not worry, there were things I liked as well. The first one of them being the unusual hostility between Naruto and Sakura. Of course, I mean the emotional hostility and the sincerity of that blow Sakura dealt. It was not comic relief, it was not Sakura being violent and stern with Naruto like she is in canon. I say that it is "only unusual" but I think I have never seen it before in fan-fiction so it was very refreshing. Also, while their exchanges did not hint at a realised NaruSaku, they did not dismiss them either. There were no hints of any pairings whatsoever and I was glad for that because it would have only distracted from the story You wanted to tell. A smile crept onto my face when the summoned Kage Bunshins started whining and protesting. I have seen this only once so while it was not as refreshing as the above-mentioned point, it still was "pretty refreshing". Naruto's Kage Bunshins are perfect copies of him so there is no reason for them to be obedient 100 % of the time. I wish I could see that more often instead of just "Naruto, the Hokage, defeats paperwork via Kage Bunshin no Jutsu". How You alternated between the Naruto and Sasuke passages gave Your story a good rhythm. On one hand, the structure became predictable early on but, on the other hand, that same predictability made me "giddy" with anticipation every time I saw the line-breaker. It was like "and now for Naruto/Sasuke - let's see what happens". I appreciate that You did not dislose any concrete details about what Sasuke did in the past or how come he was so ragged, exhausted and hadn't eaten in days. I could just say that You did not have enough imagination to give us those details but after having read Your story, I doubt whether their presence would have contributed positively or negatively. Sometimes it is better to leave a few things up to the readers' imagination. I would also say the same about the conclusion. The only thing that is clear is that Naruto accepted Sasuke back and that Sasuke is happy about it and the rest is "history". Does Sakura accept him as well or not? What about the rest of the former "Konoha 12"? What about the other shinobis and civilians? Did the try to lynch him? All these and other questions are left hanging in the air and only we, the readers, can answer them. It is a good thing in this context because if You had offered a more detailed conclusion, You would just make some readers call bullshit on You and be angry. This way, all is well. I hope You find this review both informative and constructive. |
