Actually... Australia wasn't THAT hard hit in the UC Gundams.

Yeah, Sydney became a new bay a few hundred clicks in diameter, but really, most of the damage was from the shockwave, like the kind expected of the Tsar Bomba.

I hear ya on that rant about Junius Seven's impact if it had been whole being equal to a Mass Extinction Event, something that big and weighing as much as that part of the colony does would create an enormous bang on impact in addition to the violent earthquakes and tsunami if it hit even remotely close to the ocean plus volcanic activity.

The debris cloud from the impact would be just as destructive if not more than the impact itself as it and the resulting volcanic ash spread out and cause temperatures to plummet, killing crops and animals that have no cold hardiness.

In all, the Junius Seven colony drop, like you said, would have been far, far worse if the colony hadn't been broken up during reentry
