I think that they did have bathrooms, but really basic ones which were holes into pits which were cleaned monthly by hand, by some unfortunate soul. They chamber pots were for at night, therefore the chamber pot emptier would only have to visit once a day at a set time rather than always poking her head in to check (which would be quite awkward) or, having a bell for the occupants of the castle to ring. "EMPTIER! I have just released the waters of man into my pot, empty!" (That would be strange) Besides, you can't do a (not liquid) into a chamber pot, you have to use the pit/lavatory.

I just read this today and just by looking from chapter one to the last one, you have become better writer adding more details and more stronger sense of the characters feelings and reactions. I love this story by the way, though I did question the thought of Miles and Maggie pretending to be ghosts, and convincing them they're dead. In Black Dawn when they heard about Miles being "dead" Maggie saw her parents react so strongly, so I wouldn't say that they would jump in the idea of them believing they were dead. But then again I couldn't think of another way for that to happen.
Good job overall and I hope you continue with this story, don't leave with us wondering how will they possibly get out! :)
