Reviews for Just Starting
Newtinmpls chapter 1 . 6/7/2013
It's wonderful. I had tears in my eyes at the end. I loved the out take.
Mary Rose chapter 1 . 12/11/2010
Sorry but the ending ruined the story for me. Never rescued is just too depressing. Even the T.V movies got them rescued. A shame because I had liked the story up till then.
Tabitha12 chapter 1 . 7/18/2009
Very well done! Your use of an original character to tell a pre-shipwreck story makes perfect sense to me - after all, unless you go back to each castaway's parents, who could better? the imagery of Ken 's imagination re Ginger being lost in the ocean is especially good. I'm not a big Ginger fan, but this story really made me feel like I know her better, and like her!

Ever thought about doing one where Ginger's sister, or parents are included?
Melchy chapter 1 . 6/6/2009
This was marvelous! I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this. Seeing Ginger through the eyes of an observer is fresh and original and really puts a completely different spin on the character. I love that Ginger became real to me while I was reading this.

I wish you would do the others this way. Brilliant!
special agent Ali chapter 1 . 5/30/2009
aw he really liked her, don't worry Ken she is still alive
littlesoprano chapter 1 . 5/26/2009
My apologies for the tardy review, but I wanted to have time to actually sit down and do a thorough job of it. I love this story. I had actually read it before someplace, and was so happy to find it posted here. This is a lovely piece of writing- sweet, sad, nostalgic and yet never overly sentimental or trite. The emotions of the narrator are simply and sincerely expressed. The part about his naming the boat Ginger Grant was especially effective. From a narrative standpoint, it's always a nice change of pace to read about the characters pre-island.

Ginger is one of my two favorite GI characters, and it's refreshing to read a story that lets her real essence shine through. Underneath all the vanity and drama was someone with a warm, helpful nature, who was very hopeful and really quite innocent. You captured that very well.

One more thing- this story could be used as an example of the right way to use an original character in a fan fiction. Even though it is Ken's story in one way, it is mostly Ginger's story. The original character is used to illuminate something about the canon character. The result was that I genuinely cared about the original character. I wished that he could have known Ginger was alive.
callensensei chapter 1 . 5/21/2009
You capture Ginger's electric essence wonderfully, and describe a storm so fierce and forbidding that it's a miracle they ever made it to shore at all.

I especially enjoyed the use of the OC first person narrator here, who was very believable in his own right and who showed us another side of the movie star: the very playful and human side, that sometimes we forget was very much a part of Ginger.

Well done, and glad to see you on the board!
ShakNali chapter 1 . 5/21/2009
Aww, this is sweet and a little sad and just very well written. I never thought about the people 'back home' who would've been missing the castaways. I'm glad you did, and I hope you write about the others too. Thanks for sharing.
