Wow, so few words to convey such incredible horror and conviction. Very powerful imagery and very realistic in the brevity - as if the narrator really didn't want to spend time dwelling on the memory because it was too real and too painful. So much expressed here, but what was the most clear was the friendship as being unshakable. Your narrative in this reminds me of Mal's opening narration on the aired version of Firefly.
