Just a littlefan chapter 18 . 11/9/2019 Ah, it’s so cute when they undress Newkirk and tuck him into bed. Poor baby, so hurt. |
Guest chapter 14 . 3/29/2017 I'm pretty sure Newkirk's eyes are blue. |
katbybee chapter 20 . 1/9/2017 This is such a great story, and one I really enjoyed. It was well-written. and very well plotted. There was a lot of suspense. and. some downright scary moments. I really liked how you played the relationships between all the various characters...especially Newkirk and Carter, as well as. the way Schultz treated the boys. Also, your Family Feud. scene was hilarious! Kudos to you! |
Abracadebra chapter 1 . 1/2/2017 I'm checking through my "Favorite Authors" list for the Reviewathon and realizing that it's crazy that I've never reviewed this story, because it's been one of my favorites for years and I've read it multiple times! Deana was one of my first favorite authors on the site - she remains an active writer, but in other fandoms nowadays. Her work for HH is very Newkirk-centric (yay!) This story might set the HH fandom's standard for whump, as she puts Newkirk through the wringer. But it's WAY more than whump, if the hurt/comfort genre is not your cup of tea. It's a well paced adventure - how are these two guys going to get back to camp? - and it's a very sweet buddy tale, with Hogan looking after his charge. The plotting and writing in this story elevate it way above the pack. Every chapter leaves a question in the air - OMG, how are they getting out of this? What next? Deana also does a great job with the scene changes - Look at chapter 4 for a great example of how she switches the point of view repeatedly while firmly maintaining control over the story line. And even once a rescue is under way, the adventure is not over. They still have to get this crazy mishap past the Germans! The writing is very crisp and the dialogue really moves the action forward. Chapter 6 is a great example of the dialogue-heavy, narrative-light approach Deana tends to employ. The scene where Wilson is setting a broken bone amazes me every time I read it. I can hear the snap, and see the wince and feel the pain! (Wilson actually has one of his best turns in this story - he is a major character in the middle half the story, and we see his character drawn out as the chapters advance.) The third quarter of the story flags just a little bit after the quick pace and intense emotion of the first half. I personally would have preferred to see more LeBeau and Kinch and less Carter in these chapters, but that's just me. But by Chapter 16, Deana has revived the tension with a plot twist that puts Newkirk back in the line of fire. And by Chapter 19, the humor really picks up - there is a very funny scene between Newkirk and Klink, who is perfectly captured in all his glorious vanity. This is a terrific story that was a Bronze Papa Bear Award winners for general stories in 2009. (2010 awards) |
