This chapter was absolutely perfect!

There was so much promise in this chapter starting with an incredibly romantic gesture from Rhett but ending with Rhett storming out of the room. This man needs to learn to stay and deal with unpleasantries but he seems incapable of doing so. He definitely has a hard time acknowledging his mistakes but expects others to do so without question. Life has definitely disappointed him and made him a scared to try. Don't throw away this second chance!

I don't think Scarlett ever imagined herself laughing with and confiding in Melanie as they did in this chapter. The comic relief of Melanie's impersonation and Rhett's tumble from the cot balanced the more heartfelt moments well. Come to think of it, I don't think Scarlett ever believed that she would invite Rhett back in their bed despite her regrets but she has. Loved them holding hands as they fall asleep!

I love Melly but she needs to work on her timing. Your writing is so stunning you can actually feel Rhett's conflict about whether or not to be completely honest with Scarlett. I think it stuns both of them because it is so rare in their relationship. I'm glad that Scarlett challenges Rhett on his habit of fleeing from personal conflict because it is so utterly frustrating. How does one build a marriage when one party is constantly disappearing and doesn't seem to care about the consequences of their actions and the other is obsessed with a childhood crush and is oblivious to their own feelings?

Never one to self reflect but that is exactly what you've forced Scarlett to do. The fact that she doesn't trust Rhett's changed attitude and behavior is so characteristic of her. She needs someone she trusts, good ole mammy the marriage counselor, to make it clear to her that her husband loves her. I just can't wait for their talk.

The banter between Scarlett and Rhett is adorable. I'm glad that Rhett is willing to answer all her questions and that they are taking baby steps towards each other. It's time for both of them to let their guard down. It was heartbreaking to read Scarlett's reaction to Rhett's painful words upon his return but how was he supposed to know her feelings had changed? Such a great chapter.

The opening scene of this chapter was cute. These two are finally having an honest conversation. It seems that Dr. Meade has not forgotten Rhett's transgression from the war and it was definitely amusing watch them argue over medical research. It's obvious these two men dislike each other. It's refreshing to see Scarlett request Rhett's presence during her examination.

It's nice to see that Rhett is at least acknowledging his role in his disastrous marriage. Maybe he can begin to right some wrongs and be more transparent with his feelings. The similarities between Ellen and Scarlett as mothers was very interesting and accurate. Rhett's interaction with all three children was heartwarming especially his treatment of Ella. I'm also hoping that these two can exchange those three words soon. The thing I love most about this story is that it's from Rhett's perspective which I always gravitate to and enjoy.

I forgot about the dream sequence with his mother but it was absolutely perfectly written. I'm glad that Scarlett has awoken and that it was Rhett who had to break the news of the lost baby. Maybe now they can make the necessary changes to their relationship. Your writing is so rich with detail.

There were so many details to love in this chapter: Rhett nursing Scarlett, the conversation between Melanie and Rhett (I suspect she knew but wouldn't vocalize her thoughts), and Rhett's musing about how much he needs and wants her. One can only hope Scarlett was aware of some of it. I particularly liked the comparison between Sherman's assault on Atlanta and Rhett's pursuit of Scarlett.

Others have attempted this premise but your version feels the most realistic. This is how the story should have proceeded. Rhett should have been by her side to show to everyone how in love and devoted he was to Scarlett. I am always frustrated by the scene as it's just another insurmountable obstacle between them. I'm so happy that you've rectified the situation.

I've read this story multiple times over the years and I'm embarrassed that I never reviewed it before. It's that good. I'm going to rectify my mistake by saying that I love this first chapter. Dr. Meade is suspicious and Melanie is exhibiting an iron will. I'm glad that someone heard Scarlett calling for Rhett. There is such promise in that simple twist!
