This is really good. I'd like to encourage you to write more. I completely agree with you about being tired of romance. I would love to see some gen John stories, where he isn't paired with a machine - even if it is disguised as a hot teenage girl. :D

I liked the pacing of this and the characterization, how Sarah was wary of John's possible resentment but then John clung to her anyway. I think she needed that more than he did. I would like to see a scene where John thanks his mom, though. Like how in "Goodbye to All That" little Marty told Sarah thanks and Sarah wasn't used to hearing that.

Anyway, welcome to the T:SCC fandom and I look forward to reading more.
