I just read some of the other reviews, and I think, seeing as this is au, you don't have to strictly follow canon. Seriously. And even if the characters are ooc, it doesn't matter. In certain stories it gets damn annoying, but it doesn't apply to this story for me. I love the little town you are using as a setting, none of your OCs make me want to stop reading, seeing as they are all pretty well done and not annoying, and everyone has actually had a part in making the story progress. I used to stay away from au stories because I would get mad at everything that wasn't canon, but now I find au storylines enjoyable.

I just found this story today, and it is such a cute story. Love it love it love it!

The best way to write a fanfic about a series while maintaining a truthful characterization is by fully understanding and knowing about the development of the characters in the series.
I'm sorry to tell you that 8 episodes do not suffice when it comes to characterization. Many other things happen to them all - yes even Relena matures and becomes a pivotal character, and the focus is never on her, Heero is the canon protagonist.

If you want the canon version of what happened in the past of the gundam pilots read Episode Zero, it's a manga and can be found online to read for free! It just takes a bit of googling, not that hard right?

I've read bits and pieces of this story and I have to say that especially Jacinda kind of disappoints me. She seems too Mary Sue (perfect character) that only has good sides when helping the pilots. Also, she was ex-Alliance, so I don't think she'd be immediately all that helpful. Frankly, no one would immediately be all that helpful when being confronted with strangers that turn out to be rebels.

Anyway, if you watch the whole series, the OVA and read the mangas (Episode Zero, Ground Zero and the other mangas that are set between the Eve Wars and Endless Waltz) you'll probably get a completely different grasp of them.

Characterizations:

Duo - Yes, he hides his sorrows behind a mask, but he really is not depressed! He just deals with things differently from others and he's not all that much of a joker. Actually, in the whole series he made some sarcastic remarks and pulled faces, but he didn't prank people so don't know where that comes from.

Heero - He's not robotic at all, if you watch the entire series then you'll find out. Heero actually espouses the philosophy that following your emotions is the correct way to live, but that they shouldn't jeopardize your missions.

Quatre - Quatre is not innocent at all (he destroys a colony!). He has a sweet demeanor yes, but he becomes quite unstable in a certain period.

Trowa - Mysterious? Not at all, just like DUo he's an orphan who picked his own name and fights. He's strong yes, and quiet. But he's a lot like a mix between Heero and Quatre in that regard.

Wufei - The one guy you got right. A miracle I guess. Yes, if you read Episode Zero you'll find the reason for his heavy heart. And if you watch the last part of the series ditto.

You described it as if Jacinda was the one who saw Duo first.
In this chapter it was her lover.
Might want to fix that. It doesn't totally break the fourth wall, but it certainly turns it into a fun house mirror.

Yeah, I know, not going with the female character, but you're not showing that either. I just love it when Wufei ends up in a parental situation of someone not Duo.

I love Quatre.
He rocks.
Smart, sweet, strong, stubborn, and determined to do what he believes is right.
But its really the sweet part of him that rocks the most.

The kiddos were only fighting for a year or so.
Gundams are basically next generation. It's like the space shuttle versus an airplane. Airplanes have been around for over a hundred years... but they still can't get you into space. The space shuttle though, well that's a fancy piece of ship.
