I love how you've shown how the circumstances after the first World War lead to all that misery for the German people, and how promises of greatness then lead to the dark path the country ended up taking. You can really feel it in the narration, and then how the promises of greatness lead to... well, all that happened afterwards. Good job!

As an American who is currently on holiday in Germany, and who has visited former concentration camps and been to lectures and memorials, this really hit hard. The frightening thing about Hetalia is, there is I think a tendency among fanfic writers to personify the nations as slightly crazy during the darker periods of their history, when in fact canonically we can see that Germany is NOT crazy during World War II, he is perfectly aware of what he is doing. It's very disturbing. And you showed that perfectly- not crazy, but desperate, and very determined. Actually, as a result of this trip I think Germany is my favorite Hetalia character. He's complicated, though not inherently evil- he has so many different layers, and yes, some of them are very dark.

I would actually like to see more fic dealing with these different sides of Germany- I think it's a great country that has recognized its past and is determined to do better. The modern Germany is very environmental, tolerant and efficient, and I think this would be an interesting thing to explore in the Hetalia world.

Wow. This was so moving. It captured the feeling in Germany before the war so perfectly of desperation and a willingness to follow almost anyone so long as they would make it better. And while it doesn't excuse what happened it puts it in perspective which is so important to have here. Thank you for writing this.

This was really nice! I really enjoyed this because this is one of those fics that I can actually see and understand what Germany is feeling and still not say that he was out of character. (Very hard since Germany in the canon is one who rarely shows his pained feelings)
