Artist and mineral enthusiast here! Ooh, I wanted to jump in the story and start rambling about how many other choices of stone he has other than amethyst!

Personally, since money wasn't an issue I would have gone with the rare tanzanite, the symbolism would have been superb! Fresh out of the ground it's a dull, rather ugly colored grey-greenish brown zoisite crystal. Nothing to write home about, and other varieties of zoisite are far more eye-catching and colorful. However, when treated with heat (wink-wonk) it turns a deep blue-violet color! It's only found in this one small quarry in Tanzania, and was discovered in the 60s after a wildfire changed the once dismissive crystals on the ground to a vibrant gem-quality blue rivaling any sapphire.
Granted, tanzanite is not as durable as amethyst and can't take a beating, but as long as she takes care of it and doesn't go knocking it about on a daily basis it shouldn't be an issue.
