This is really, really well written. 'whisper the idea of home' 'the life he had come to expect to last forever' 'slight and delicate, so much smaller than his'...there's more, but those were my favorite phrasings. To put it simply, this is a lovely example of the wealth of meaning derived from few words, so long as they're used right. You should be proud of it-it's hard to make something so many others have done and tell it in a way that still keeps it special.
