ShadeyCharacter chapter 1 . 11/25/2008 Oh. Nice! I very much liked this piece! You wrote beautifully. I like the China character. Do you mind if I add this story to my Nuada C2 archives? |
Amelia Mangan chapter 1 . 11/6/2008 This is an excellent little story, which appears to have been unfairly overlooked by most reviewers. (Perhaps that's simply because the general public is less familiar with the Skulduggery Pleasant-verse than with the Hellboy-verse?) The central idea is both clever and well-executed; the atmosphere is deftly sketched without any unnecessary ornamentation (I particularly liked the images of "a woman's shadow slid[ing] over the ceiling", and "the soft sound of lonely jazz flowing from the apartment's open window" - both are lovely touches). The central point of the piece, however, is of course the interaction between China and Nuada, which is quite beautifully drawn; the subtle power games that take place between them here are simultaneously intriguing in and of themselves, and entirely true to their previously established characterizations. I'm almost tempted to ask for a continuation of some kind, but perhaps that might detract from the delicate effectiveness of this short piece. About the only small nitpicks I'd offer are those related to continuity (China's eyes are described in the novel as bright blue, not dark; it's a fairly notable plot point, as regards her connection to Mr. Bliss), and the occasional repetition of words ("'I come seeking answers', he answered") and phrases (the only slightly reworded references in paragraphs 11 and 18 to "Nuada's pale eyes looking elsewhere from China's black ones). This is nothing a decent editor couldn't easily fix, however, so I wouldn't worry about it overmuch. All in all, great work! I hope you feel proud of the work you've done here - you should - and look forward to reading more from you in future. |
Ms. Ace chapter 1 . 9/12/2008 Loved it! It was simply, sweet, not to short or long, just right! Great Job Hope you write more! |
