I've read this fic many times before I go to sleep so much that it became almost a ritual. I don't know what it is about this fic that I found so engrossing. But then I found the answer in the form of Dougan's way of showing affection. He's become such a desperate man wanting to be shown love that it consumed him to the point where he doesn't know what's right and wrong anymore. Should I feel sorry for him? Maybe. But do I feel sorry for him? No. His way of loving Sanzo is so toxic that I couldn't stand it, but I still keep rereading the parts where he's in a scene. I have been in the same situation where I had a one-sided affection, but I was completely content to watch him from afar and be a happy man. This type of love that Dougan has is a tragedy in itself, and I guess that's what drew me in everytime.

And I initially found your portrayal of Sanzo here a bit odd at first, but then I remembered, in the original Journey to the West, Xuan Zhang was a calm man, and I came to love your portrayal of Sanzo. Then again, I always found pre-Journey Sanzo to be calmer and gentler compared to his current self.

I absolutely love everything about this fic, and because of it, over time, it became an inspiration to writing my main Saiyuki fic. And whenever I feel like I want to have a good read of Sanzo x Goku, I just go back to this fic and read it all over again

Just as how Hong-yu has described their relationship...it's just so right for them to be together...whether it's a romantic relationship or not (personally i like it not to be one), how you described their encounters and interactions up till now is just SO right, breath-taking and tranquil...i'm not good with words...but it's just gave me so much "aww"s and it's just plain gorgeous :)

i'm kinda sad for Hong-yu though...He just understood this whole situation so well and in a respectful manner, and yet Sanzo was still not-so-kind towards him...
and for him to have such a bad attendant alone is pathetic enough :(

somehow just by reading the poems, Goku's has more of a masculine sense and Sanzo's is more feminine *grin* (i'm sorry if that's not what you've intended OTL)

it's very appropriate and traditional as this is part of the Japanese/Chinese culture
In the past, ppl (lovers) were very subtle with their feelings, and would often exchange short poems to express something that's normally not allowed to be said *heart*
you captured it perfectly by describing how Goku wanted to open up a conversation that are out of their normal daily interaction

I can totally imagine those short 3 lines be translated into Japanese love poem
it reminded me of the anime "chouyaku hyakunin isshou: uta no koi" :)

This was so good I didn't want to stop to review every chapter! I even waited until I read the epilogue on your livejournal to comment. I love it! The way you combined Dougan's lunacy and obsession that you see in the movie in a new way at the temple is great! The slow and careful opening of Sanzo's old wounds and allowing Goku in was practically poetic! (okay a slight exaggeration but not by a lot!) I liked seeing Hakkai and Gojyo, if only for a while, and would love for you to explore why Gojyo would want to be "close" to Hakkai .

My favorite part without a doubt was Sanzo and Goku's relationship. How things slowly progressed and weren't rushed, it just fit. Of course there was a lot of OOCness going on but I doubt this story would have worked without it, and because of that I don't care! I love it and it's officially my favorite Saiyuki fic! Great work and thanks for the wonderful story. (oh and the ending was great, a mute point though compared to the rest of the story sorry).

Dougan's thinking pattern is so sickeningly and creepily REALISTIC! I read somewhere that many maniacs think exactly like that. geh, kimuchi warui(((

I love this story. It flows very well. The plot itself is very well written and cohesive. You clearly had a lot of practice and thought this through for a while.
