Reviews for Grow Up
InuColey chapter 1 . 8/29/2019
Hi!

I was halfway through writing this review when I realized the story is from 2008... so I suppose it's not too relevant anymore but I'll post it anyway since I just wrote it all out!

I myself am pretty split. To be honest, the manga is supposed to happen over the course of, what, 1 year? Kagome is graduating middle school (Yikes) at the end of the manga. So saying Sesshomaru 'raised' Rin is a bit of a stretch. When you really read the manga and disregard all the fanfiction reading you've done, we actually know very little about the nature of Rin and Sesshomaru's relationship. The best we get is when Sesshomaru's mother asks Jaken, "What is the human girl to Sesshomaru?" And Jaken replies with, "I don't know, but she has always been treated much more favorably than I despite my long years of service."

What we do see is that Jaken is the one who brings her to get food and babysits her. Sesshomaru only protects her and mourns for her when she dies in Hell, claiming, "Nothing is worth the cost of Rin's life". The most touching part (to me) in that chapter is when he catches Kohaku from falling off a cliff and tells him that he will not save him again, and that his arm is only ever meant to hold a sword. Of course, by the end of the arc he has thrown his sword aside to hold Rin (D'aaawww!). Unfortunately that whole part is left out of the anime. If you have only watched the anime, I highly recommend reading the manga as so much is changed and left out.

While the pairing may not be 'canon', neither is shipping them as father and daughter. That has never been stated. All we know is Sesshomaru does enjoy her presence, and values her life dearly. Not all love in the world has to fit into the category of either 'Romance' or 'Parental'.

As for me, one reason I enjoy shipping them as a future couple is because I've just always been a huge sap for the romance movies and novels where time is the enemy. It's so tragic. For example, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, or The Time Traveler's Wife, or even The Butterfly Effect. If they did end up together, it would mean Sesshomaru has fully overcome his racist anti-human crap, and is embracing love (presumably for the first time). But it would also be tragic, as that love would end so much sooner because Rin is mortal. Those are just the types of love stories that I gravitate towards. Not to mention, Rin is a canon character (not an OC) and because she is a child during the series, you kind of get to turn her into an OC as she grows up, which just gives so much potential for her character.

Anyway, beautiful story! So well written. And I do enjoy to father/daughter stories as well. Like I said, we have no idea what their future actually holds.

scipio96 chapter 1 . 7/28/2015
This is so cute :) I find it so hard to imagine what Rin would be like in her teenage years, especially around Sesshomaru, but I think you're right; their relationship wouldn't suddenly change from paternal to romantic.
pikaree1 chapter 1 . 12/8/2014
Petal: It defies my reasoning, too, Silent Scribe. But maybe they're Bunny Drop fans. Whatever. Fluffy and Rin are forever father and daughter in my opinion.
Pixychick84 chapter 1 . 10/3/2014
Although I'm not so imature as to say age diffrents in relationships can never happen, it's also true that age dose not much effect relationships with family. Love it!
jtdarkman chapter 1 . 5/15/2014
Yep I dont think I could sleep with my all of the sudden legal step daughter either bro I get it lol father daughter ftw
overninethousand chapter 1 . 7/25/2013
To anon, yes he did act fatherly. Otherwise why is she obedient to him? You don't obey your lover or friend, you obey your father. Why does he appoint her babysitters? You don't do that for a lover or friend, that's something a parent does for their child.
Squee-bunny chapter 1 . 6/27/2013
Absolutely beautiful story/writing...

I imagine some of those townspeople to be much like the very fangirls that promote an almost incestuous Sesshomaru/Rin pairing in this fandom _

I think you're especially accurate in your last post-note when you say that the paternal/filial relationship wouldn't be altered by Rin's maturity. Like she says, it's only the rest of the world that needs to grow up :)

Thank you for this superb fic!
anon chapter 1 . 12/20/2012
Um...maybe because he never acted like a father to her in the first place? Just guessing, not criticizing, but I personally think all of you have it wrong.

His feelings for her are neither paternal nor romantic. Rin is a pet, cruel as it may sound :/

And father/daughter shippers are just as guilty as Sess/Rin shippers of reading too much into it, sorry.
JenEvan chapter 1 . 9/17/2012
For the last part, don't we all sometimes long for that? To be in our parents' comforting embrace when the day felt bad? It's touching, and most part, amusing. I can imaging Rin in her haughty swagger - a stance she'd learnt from Sesshoumaru; and how well-spoken she is when she chose to be. I think you've got a pretty accurate adolescent Rin, along with her streak of teenage rebellious behavior :)
frozen water droplet chapter 1 . 2/3/2011
Cute and sweet. :3
AcctClerk23 chapter 1 . 7/28/2010
I think it would be more understandable if Rin became violent during those moments did some of the hitting when remarks about her and Sesshy are brought up, but I guess one of them has to be reasonable xD
Seto K4iba1 chapter 1 . 1/19/2010
Good to see that someone else sees that Sesshomaru will still act like a father for Rin when she gets older.
Taraah36 chapter 1 . 10/4/2009
don't we all want to be held like that
CherFleur chapter 1 . 7/14/2009
