I’m glad they make a remake of the game and decided to make it a saga so my interest to .hack comes back again.

as the fans of the pairing would have liked

[Could that be because it seemed entirely one-sided? Haseo liked Shino, to be sure, but the only time when Shino turned to him was when she despaired of finding Ovan (and even then Haseo didn’t seem to respond to her, perhaps he didn’t really start to fall for her until after?). Even after Haseo revives Shino, what does she say, even in the epilogue? Not “thanks for saving me, you’re such a great guy” or “I’m glad it was you”, it’s “let’s find Ovan”. She’s a manipulative, self-centered (correction: Ovan-centered) girl based on her repeated actions in Roots (even before the end of GU), my opinion is that Tabby deserves a better chance than the cleric – at least she had the guts to say ‘I love you, Haseo’ and work for him, besides asking him to give her a chance. Pity he never does]

I wanted to dwell on how Shino came to give the blades to him.

[She wanted a stronger fetter? We knew she was plotting with Ovan to get Haseo into the Twilight Brigade by episode 2 of Roots, and she didn’t show a great degree of scruples through the series. I also want to point out that she’s in white in the flashback, indicating it’s before Ovan disappears. Not many opportunities to show it, but when she threatens to dissolve TaN she has this subdued ‘give me what I want now or I obliterate you all’ sense about her. And unfortunately, I sense that if it was Haseo instead of Ovan, she’d just ask if they knew where he was and then she’d return to Ovan]

Like Haseo having a bit of his jerky G.U. attitude

[Wasn’t he that way throughout Roots anyway? The only person he wasn’t directly mean to was Tabby and Shino. And maybe Sakisaka, whom he mostly ignored, although you could argue all of those]

The beginning half feels a little stilted in the narrative progression, and things end up getting a lot more sappy than I normally like, but all in all this was a good attempt.

I don't think that Shino and Haseo were in-character throughout the whole story, but I am sure you were aware of this, since you did mention it. However; as with any piece of fan-fiction, I believe that the characters are never exactly in-character. And that's not a bad thing(most of the time). If anything, adding your own variation of the characters while still staying true to the values of the originals adds to the emotional feeling of the story, since you are free to have them say what you, as a writer, would want them to say, the way you want them to say it. It removes certain boundaries. :)

And of course there are fics out there that totally butcher characters and have them so OOC that it's just ridiculous, but with your story, you made it all relevant. Nothing was just thrown in just because you wanted it in there; there was purpose.

And when others read your story, I'm sure they'll feel the emotions you put into the characters.

Anyway, I should wrap this up. I thought this was a great story. I really felt sympathy when Haseo unleashed all of his repressed anger and jealousy and directed it toward Shino. I mean, you really can't blame the guy for feeling that way.
