Reviews for A Matter of Principle
mtwin chapter 1 . 4/30
I read this ages ago and I’m so glad I found it again.
You made Beverly a great, flushed out character with a wonderfully entertaining POV. I like that she had very realistic doubts about who they were or what kind of people they were, even though she wanted to trust them. The boys’ interactions were spot on too.

This story pulled me in and got me invested in the characters from the get-go; your characterization was quite good and I really liked the way you told the story. Beverly's POV was an interesting one, and it was a refreshing twist on the usual kind of stories like this :)

A fantastic story! Gritty, realistic, engaging and beautifully characterised through both time periods, I couldn't stop reading and enjoyed Beverly immensely. I look forward to reading more of your work. Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful tale.

Supernatural Fan Fiction Monthly Awards Review: August 2016

With as often as the brothers were moved as children, logic dictates they would run across someone from their past at the most inopportune time. Your story captures that moment. Nicely done, that.

Beverly was a good choice for the POV. However, I would have liked her memories of the past done in Italics or maybe dated to show where they began and ended. I know FF ate line breaks, but those wouldn't have been enough in this instance.

Otherwise, this story was well formatted, grammatically clean and had a nice plot resolution.

I really enjoyed this. I've been making my way through your stories on here. This is the second time now that you've had young Dean with long hair. Love it. Somehow I picture that too. The man clearly knows how to work hair product ;P

I love John in here! XD
He's awesome!
Batboys of Baker Street chapter 1 . 9/9/2012
Alright, so this was written, well, a while ago, but I still feel compelled to review because it was really and truly amazing and I really enjoyed reading it. Not only did you manage to flawlessly nail the outsider POV in a way that felt natural and honest (and is possibly one of the best ousider POVs I've read) but you also kept Sam and Dean in character and kept very true to the spirit of the show as well.

I can't think of a single complaint to make about this story - it was all fantastic and interesting and wonderfully written, as I said and very nicely done. I really loved the way she remembered Sam and Dean and the flashback scene was just brilliant - plus it had John, which made me grin because I adore John. And I really love the way you wrote her going to their motel room - she was really brave and I liked her. I mean, even believing they were criminals and brutal killers, she still risked going there. :) Just amazing.

I can't think of anything else to say, but I loved this and it was perfect!

You are brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
Jillian A.K chapter 1 . 2/7/2012
I have been looking for this story for ages. I read it long ago and then lost it. So happy!

My favorite lines, (they stayed in my head for years, and kept me searching for this fic):

"My brother has power of attorney,"/"Good thing this didn't happen a couple weeks ago, huh, Sammy?"/Somehow, she doubted there'd been cake and candles when they got back from the courthouse.

"...you're expecting fewer schoolyard 'accidents' this year, aren't you?"/"...The day we rely on students to keep order is the day we admit that we've given up doing it ourselves." (My imagination inserted another line into my memory, that if the faculty were doing theij job, their students wouldn't have to.)

Some other stand out or favorite lines:

"Hunting knife, six inches."/...no more eloquent statement on the nature of their school district than that Sam could identify the weapon so easily, and Dean didn't ask what it was doing in a middle school...

"I didn't lose"

She belatedly checked Sam's file... [I like this line for the word 'belatedly'. She had automatically dismissed Sam's claims without ever giving him the benefit of the doubt. And she should have at least checked beforehand, not after the fact. The whole reason we file this type of paperwork is to smooth the road later, but it doesn't help if it isn't checked. I just think that choice of word adds character and realism and touches on bureaucracy and that brings the reader in because we all know the frustration of bureaucracy.]

[Another bit I think shows depth of character]: His face closed off. "I'm a widower," he answered, pushing the signed form back./A recent one too, by the look of it. [He lost her so long ago, and it still cuts as if it were yesterday. That says a lot.]

He winked at her before snapping off a salute... virtually everyone of her race and generation had seen a color guard give the real thing over a flag-draped casket... [This gives another facet to John's character - playfullness, and adds the feel of history to Beverly. Excellent].

"Didn't anyone ever tell you to take off your hat in a lady's presence, son?" [Again, this shows character. John was a marine - and a gentleman].

[I like the description of Sam having grown into a haunted man. It parellels John, haunted by Mary's ghost].

"Speaking as a taxpayer, Agents, I'm appalled that the Bureau loses track of where it assigns its personnel," [Adding depth to Beverly again. Plus the bit about maybe committing a moving violation later. You really fleshed her out nicely.]

Plus the closing line - tearing down the poster. It reminds me of the line 'Thanking them would have made real something she didn't want to believe in.' It's like she's also tearing the veil from her eyes. Even though she doesn't want to.

Regards,

Jillian

This one is fun. I'm always glad when someone recognizes that Sam and Dean are doing good things despite their criminal records.

I googled Sean Kennerly... And I am very amused. By that and the rest of your lovely story! It was very good, I always appreciate a well-written outsider POV. They can be hard to find, but this was certianly one of them. :D
