Lorendiac chapter 3 . 2/21/2008 The basic concept is amusing enough. I don't know how I'd handle it if, at Pete's age, I'd made the same discovery. It would come as a severe shock, obviously, although eventually I'd have started thinking about ways to use this disguise ability for my own amusement without anyone knowing certain stunts were being pulled by me in my "normal" human persona . . . The way you end this chapter, with Roni somehow knowing at a glance that our narrator is a Skrull, DEFINITELY caught me by surprise. I mean sure, I figured sooner or later someone was going to know or suspect that there was something very weird about his family tree (the story would be pretty bland if his discovery of Skrull blood never actually made any difference in his life!), but I wasn't expecting the first suspicions to happen so abruptly and mysteriously! Roni doesn't even seem to have an Acme Skrull Detector in her hand at the moment, so I'm left wondering how she can tell. Psychic sense for a person's true species? Superhuman sense of smell? A warning signal from some miniaturized alien technology that she always carries but that isn't as obvious as a handheld Acme Skrull Detector might be? I'm also wondering just why his mom thought (or used to think even if in hindsight she's reconsidering) it would be a peachy keen idea to let him get all the way into high school before warning him about his alien genetics. Of course, you're deliberately drawing that mystery out by making the narrator rush off to school before there's time for a heart-to-heart talk with one or both of his parents about this new discovery . . . Anyway, I just wanted to let you know, in case you care, what questions and reactions are going through my mind as I finish this chapter and prepare to click forward to the next one . . . |
