The parallel between Mai/Zuko and Suki/Sokka is just plain brilliant.
Guest chapter 11 . 9/7
Hmm, not sure how I feel about this revision. Zuko, Azula, and their interactions have all definitely improved, but at the cost of muddling the side characters the plot. Pre-revision, Hide’s attraction to Azula served a narrative purpose. The love triangle it sets up gives On Ji a motive, leading clearly and naturally to her betrayal. Even though us readers might not agree with her actions, we still understand where she is coming from and can relate to her feelings.
Post-revision, the love triangle is cut off from the main narrative and now serves no narrative purpose. Both Hide and On Ji turn into dead weight, and the tension between On Ji and Azula is never really resolved. If I hadn’t read the previous version, I would have been confused by why you put in the effort of writing them at all. Meanwhile, Shoji, the actual catalyst of the climactic conflict, ends up feeling rushed and half-baked. We never figure out what kind of person he is, why he tells on Azula, or anything else about his character. Without a clear motive, his betrayal feels more like “this has to happen for the plot” than a natural outcome. All three characters end up feeling more like puppets being strung along by the plot than actual people.

I think that, overall, this chapter still works better than the original. Zuko and Azula are major characters after all, and getting their interactions right is more important to the story as a whole. But if you were ever to take a third look at this, I would suggest merging Hide and Shoji into a single character while cutting On Ji entirely. Maybe you could add a couple of lines during recess of Azula harshly rejecting him, giving us readers a clear motive for his betrayal. If you wanted to take it one step further, you could even craft this new Hide into a foil to Zuko, contrasting Hide’s brash inexperience with Zuko’s quiet competence. Making these changes will ensure that this chapter is a definitive upgrade from its previous iteration.
Rocket Axxonu chapter 45 . 9/6
Haha! Ah, it’s always so exciting to have another chapter waiting to read, and so doubly exciting to be really getting into Book 3 already.

First off, Aang’s thoughts about Sangmu toward the beginning were interesting—it makes so much sense he’d feel disconnected from events he never experienced for himself, and miss what was helping sustain his connection to his old world, however painful it might be. (Although by this point I admit after seeing Aang in the distorted world so long, I almost feel a little disconnected from the canon world as well, and can only imagine how Aang feels.)

Seeing the situation on Kyoshi in the distorted world makes for some interesting worldbuilding; in some ways it doesn’t seem overtly terrible and you can understand Sokka/Katara’s perspective that the Water Tribe has ultimately helped the people there, but at the same time there is a clear sense that, beneath the surface, they are living in fear. Getting to meet Mizuka after having learned about her and her role in the Interlude was neat, especially given her connection to Suki as her former mentor. What you might have planned for Suki and her arc I admit has been of special fascination for me for awhile, there’s potential for a betrayal of some kind that parallels Mai’s in canon, yet as Mizuka says Suki seems from all we can tell fully assimilated into the Water Tribe, and loyal to her Water Tribe family. I loved that little tease at the end of getting to see where Suki is at last and what she’s up to, especially since we really didn’t have any idea following the events at the end of Book 2. (I would guess it’s a given she and her current group are going to run into Mai and Jet at some point, and no telling how that might end up.)

The Sokka and Katara conversation—it was always clear in canon with Zuko that Zuko believed the propaganda he had been fed from childhood, that the Fire Nation was a great nation that was fighting to spread its wealth and prosperity to the rest of the world. So it was nice to get some more perspective on that from the distorted Water Tribe characters, a kind of national pride in what their people have accomplished as far as the sciences and mystic arts, beyond just how good they are at making war and conquering people. As always Katara is a little hard to read, but it’s always seemed like she’s more focused on finding a way to change her culture than in overthrowing it/replacing it, so nice to see that reinforced again here. I also liked how Sokka’s being so affected by Mizuka and her perspective partially arose from his connection to Suki, and it was nice seeing Sokka and Aang kind of bonding in spite of simply just being allies at this point, not technically friends, at least in the solid, longterm sense.

On Sokka teaching Aang waterbending, ah! Wow, I really enjoyed the bit about the bending order, how in taking on the specific traits needed for one form can lead to making learning the later forms more difficult. Part of mastering a discipline is establishing habits so that they become second nature, but then trying to overcome those habits to learn something completely different can be very difficult, there’s a lot of realism in that. (In art, once you develop a certain art style, it can be very hard to break out of that to do something different, for the same reason.)

The Toph side of the chapter—you know how I often complain about the spirit world stuff in ATLA lol, but actually this might have been my favorite part of the chapter this time around. The creepiness and odd logic of the spirit world is captured in such a compelling way (there’s this one line in particular I really loved, where Toph can still ‘see’ with earthbending, but not very far because of the lack of familiarity of the type of earth it was, and it’s strange how that just completely makes a weird kind of sense, as much as anything in the spirit world can make sense, lol), and canon-Toph being there to guide her was so awesome. It’s really the first time a canon character has played much of a role directly, which is exciting. Also great to see them join up with Yue and Nagi finally, I’m looking forward to seeing them all interact more in a group going forward.

Anyway, overall a fun chapter that definitely puts me in mind of many of the one-off episodes from the show, while also seemingly planting some seeds with Sokka and his journey and perhaps eventually Suki’s. It made for an interesting connection to the Kyoshi episode from canon Book 1, I enjoyed the way the unagi was incorporated as a means to save and protect the island as in the show, but with a new twist, and seeing details coming in from the Kyoshi novels was nice. (I’m assuming some of those bits were from Shadow, still need to read it, lol.) Also curious to see more of Thod, loved seeing him make an appearance, his being an alchemist messing with mystic recipes was strangely appropriate.

Great work, as always can’t wait for the next one!
Rocket Axxonu chapter 21 . 9/6
Love this chapter, and I’ve only come to appreciate it more the more times I’ve read it. The setting of the Dragon Altar as a spiritual equivalent to the spirit oasis in canon is so striking, and I love the twin dragons in the roles of Tui and La. That Kanna is able to help Shao (along with Aang’s Avatar State healing) where Iroh couldn’t because of her healing abilities completely makes sense—while this story tends to play things darker than the original show in a lot of ways, it’s nice when Aang’s foreknowledge helps him make things play out for the better.

As you probably guessed, I also loved the Katara/Bato battle. :P One thing I’ve really enjoyed about the distorted Book 1 was the shift to making Katara the blue spirit, and even more making scenes that were originally Zuko as the blue spirit having Katara show up instead. It kind of adds a wild card to the events in making them different from the original canon and hard to predict. And this might have been me reading into it a bit, but I love the idea of the bit of irony there at the end, as far as Katara’s reaction to Bato’s demise, in contrast to Zuko’s with Zhao.

I can't believe seasons are backwards in this world! That's nuts!

And when we meet Ozai, what's he going to be like?

Great stuff, some fascinating lore on the water tribes.
Necroknight 303 chapter 45 . 8/31
Awesome chapter again! It’s nice to be back into the groove of the Gaang on the move again after the chaos in Ba Sing Se. Still excited to see what happens with Aang/Azula. And I really like the way you’ve written Faceless Toph!
Guest chapter 1 . 8/31
Ngl I cant wait to see azula struggling with her evil side
Zulemaxo chapter 45 . 8/31
It would be really cool to see azula and sokka together, like katara and zuko in the og show.
VivaDeAsap chapter 45 . 8/31
Another amazing chapter. I’m glad you continued this story. It’s like I’m watching the avatar series again, except this time switched up places.
Villain Azula, team avatar Azula. I love them the same way. They both have that Azula charm to them and I’m especially curious to see if Princess Azula has left Distorted Azula alone or we might hear from her again.
Other than that, I hope Sokka and Katara get to talk about everything especially since Sokka was enlightened after the encounter with the last Kyoshi warrior. I’m excited to see where things go from here. Especially when Suki gets the message.
Anyways, can’t wait for the next chapter.
Wen Bin Li chapter 45 . 8/30
1. Will we see Gilak also?
2. Is there a specific reason the Unagi refuses to eat the Golden Elephant Koi?
3. I wonder what does Mizuka look like. Which canon character does she most closely resemble?

When's the next chapter coming?
Can't wait
