I also think you make a good point by having them go to Barbara and Ian-there are tons of fics out there about the Doctor and Martha having to survive in 1969 on their own, but no one seems to remember that the Doctor has connections throughout the last century. I'm not super familiar with the timelines of his earlier companions, but it seems entirely plausible that they'd be around for him to mooch off of. (Also, Ian/Barbara for the win!)
