Just re-read this story while waiting on the next chapter to your recent one and I LOVE it! I remember reading it when it was first posted and loving it so much! Your stories always are a pleasure to read and so well written! Thank you for writing them!

I'm really confused. Is Baron 18 or over 60 years old? Did Louise and Haru exist at the same time 18 years ago? I think the timeline got messed up somewhere.

Shouldn't the timeline go: 60 years ago, Baron and Louise born. Got separated. Naoko had Louise doll but it got destroyed, then 18 years ago Louise reincarnates into Haru?

Re- reading this for funzies (along with everything else you've written. In order. Nostalgia.) and now I'm dying tp know who "the mater" is. Or was.

As a quick addition, I like that you did have there be consequences for Haru's actions concerning the Jedi mind trick. Another author might have turned Haru's new abilities into a power trip fantasy where she knocked down background characters without a second thought, but I think having Miss Hashiko get in trouble was a good idea. Haru sees that her magic does a price, and she's sorry about getting an innocent person in trouble, not to mention in danger of losing her livelihood. This makes her so much more sympathetic and less like a "Possession Sue" as TV Tropes calls it. :)

This fic remains one of my favorites, and I'm glad you were able to finish it. I really like the atmosphere you create in this story: the feeling when Muta is visiting Haru to ask about making him look older as a human, when Toto and Haru are out shopping, when Haru is looking at her "family" portrait, and many others. It also has some great character moments like Hiromi's joke about the chocolate smoothie, Haru introducing Baron to Star Wars (which was already foreshadowed with her line about how much sci-fi and manga she's consumed in the past alone), Naoko eating popcorn while Muta and Toto fight, Naoko and Muta bonding (and her line where she calls him Garfield), Hiromi and Toto meeting, and more. Sure, there are some grammar problems (like switching between past and present tenses, and some of the paragraph breaks), but it is a testament to your writing that a grammar nerd like myself can enjoy this anyway. :)

Okay, so Baron figured it out a while back, but this still felt stretched out a bit too long.

Huh. This is the second Cat Returns fanfic that has Hiromi and Toto click together.

I'm sorry, but the fact that NO ONE has connected the obvious dots between Haru and Louise by now is getting ridiculous at this point.

Loved the story. For the most part it seems like something Ghibli themselves would do, the characters are well-done and behave the way they do in the original film, etc.

There are a couple of nitpicks I would make, though.

One, the more serious problem: You REALLY need to clarify who is speaking and when; there were a large number of times where I had to reread something because I didn't know who was speaking to who and it threw me off.

Two, the less serious problem but one that I think had an impact nontheless, is that IMO Haru's mother adjusted to things FAR too quickly to be believable. Yes, she had shocked reactions multiple times in Chapter Three, but her willingness to go along with Haru and Baron so easily without panic in Chapter Two is... a tad rushed. Especially considering she just saw a giant bird fly in through the hospital window, talking and carrying a cat doll that also talked and both of whom knew Haru by name. If I were a parent I would be a tad more frantic for answers, but perhaps you understood that and were considering the tone of the story.

Anyway, on the whole, good job. I liked it a lot.
