Reviews for Out of the Shadows
Topska chapter 23 . 5/31/2011
The best NWN fanfic I've ever read.

'Nuff said. -_-
Topska chapter 8 . 5/31/2011
This chapter is f#cking awesome.
Galdor123 chapter 23 . 12/7/2008
Really, really good story. I read within one day, I just couldn't stop. Every character seems so REAL, in-character...

Highlight was all the BG2 reference. Up till today BG2 is one of my favorite (if not _the_ favorite) games I've played. I liked your version of an older Nalia. I hoped to the last that the Knight-Captain would go back to her, since I for some reason don't really like Neeshka. KC Nalia cute couple :)

After reading this story I almost want to play BG2 again... maybe I still have the CDs somewhere.

Thanks for writing this story!
Natasel chapter 23 . 2/27/2008
Once I started this story, I was compelled to finish it.

There are so many praises I could heap on this story but I'll limit it to the greatest.

You have made the characters ALIVE.

I have never before, seen anyone depict a story with such humor, wit, drama and above all, HUMANITY in their characters be it the hero or supporting characters.

The strengths, the flaws, the fobilies, even the personalities at their best and at their worst seemed so real.

Bravo.
Ride4Ruin chapter 23 . 12/24/2007
Now that I've finally finished reading the whole thing, I must say It kept me entertained all the way. First off, the humor was excellent (Particularly Grobar, who else but Grobnar could come up with the idea of using shapechanging during sex?) I also very much enjoyed the little nod to the past in the form of Nalia and her recounting of her travels with the Bhaalspawn.

I found I had much more sympathy for Ammon Jerro then you seem to have had. In the game, his entire character was based around committing minor evils for the greater good and thus I wasn't ever willing to simply label him a villain. Also, I got the feeling from the in-game conversations with him that he wouldn't really care what happened to himself, the Shard-Bearer, or anyone once the King of Shadows was defeated so I found his motivation for not simply going along with the rest of the group (or at least leaving them alone) was a bit of a stretch. Sure, the Sword of Gith is a powerful artifact, but with the King of Shadows gone what is he going to use it for? Oh well, that's just me and my severely out of whack moral compass.

The final chapter and the epilogue were also especially good, and I couldn't help but smile as I read them. I feel sad that this has gotten so few reviews, it really deserves it far more attention than it has gotten (though I would probably say and believe that even if it had gotten a hundred reviews).

I wanted to add one more comment, not particularly on this chapter but as an overview. I think it's a very mature fic. I don't mean mature in the sense of there being some 'adult' content although that would be part of it. No, I mean that it is very good at conveying things like the break-up of relationships (both amongst a close working group and with a lover). Perhaps it takes life experience to write about this well - there have to be some advantages to being middleaged!

I loved the swords down 'industrial action' with the guards in the Keep against Nasher (why do I keep thinking that scene reminds me of a film, and I don't know which one?) I think the only aspect in the story which didn't quite ring true for me was the affair with Nalia, perhaps because she did not remind me of the bratty character in BG2 nor did I find her very interesting in her older incarnation. But still, Danno's guilt and ambivalence felt realistic.

You tied it up nicely in the epilogue - Casavir is the narrator, I presume. The only thing that felt slightly unfinished was the a lack of a goodbye with Grobnar and Sand in the previous chapter.
Thieving Jedi chapter 8 . 12/17/2007
I wanted to wait with reviews. I wanted to wait until I'm done reading all your chapters and then write up a full one as I reach the end. But then Chapter 8, A little Greengrass, came around and almost killed me with supressed laughter. This was the most brilliant polish up of a "romance" that I've ever had the pleasure to read. It wasn't just masterfully written, but it was unusual and (most importantly) unexpected.

Congratulations to making my day on this bleak Monday morning.

"A bizarre and terrible image of Zhjaeve and Grobnar together popped into his head,

Know that I wish you to go deeper.

I don't think I can! Unless I use some sort of device..."

I rarely have laugh-out-loud moments whilst reading fanfics but the abovementioned made me have a little chuckle to myself. You convey the voices of all the characters well, although I'd agree with the person who suggested cutting down slightly on the usage of italics.
Khellendrosiic chapter 23 . 11/25/2007
Oh wow. Just wow. That was freaking awesome.

I want to think of something to critique so I can support you in your continued awesomeness but I can't think of anything for the sheer awesome that your story has ended with. And I need to think of a different word to use other than awesome. Epic, perhaps?

Anyway, you've done amazingly well with this story. I found it about the time I reviewed last and have been eagerly watching for new chapters since. I thought great things would come of it then and I was certainly not disappointed. So, well, there's not much for me to say. I can but hope you continue to write and but hope I can write something this good eventually.

Keep it up.
Hekateras chapter 23 . 11/24/2007
Amazing. Amazing, perfect, brilliant, wonderful in every sense of the word. I'm literally falling over with happiness here. It's actually my birthday today so you can imagine how delighted I am that you chose this particular day to deliver the final parts of your tale!

Words really can't describe all the things I loved about this - the light-hearted humour, the amazingly written characters, all the innumerable plot twists, the satisfying ending... Everything was handled just right, not overdone or underdone but instead perfectly balanced and believable, from Danno's relationship with Neeshka to his lapse of despair and the constant mood swings. You've perfectly captured his emotions and throughout the fanfic, he and the other characters all feel so vibrantly *alive*.

I enjoyed the mood immensely. You did such a good job with writing the tension and bouts of hilariousness as well as the conflicts and yet fierce loyalty between the companions.

It was also suitably epic at parts. Danno's face-off with Nasher in the final chapter is something I won't be quick to forget.

Your ideas are also delightfully original, like the Shard-bearer, Knight-Lieutenant, etc. etc. actually dying because of a blow accidentally landed by Neeshka. XD Not to mention their initial escape from the ruins of the Illefarn keep. :)

I also want to add that you seemed to know just right what events to flesh out and what to omit. That's an impressive feat. :)

So yes, it's fair to say your fanfic has everything one could possibly ask of a great piece of literature. :) Sorry for the long-winded rambling, but firstly, this doesn't deserve any less than a complete and elaborate review; secondly, praise isn't something you'll complain about, right? ;P

And while I realise a proper review should also contain a bit of constructive criticism, right now I'm far too baffled at the sheer awesomeness of it to think of anything that could've been done better. Perhaps later.

Thank you for your steady dedication, effort and creativity in writing this. Have a nice weekend. :D
Hekateras chapter 16 . 11/17/2007
Just wanted to let you know I'm still enthusiastically following this story. :D You make the characters so vibrant and alive and the descriptions so vivid while keeping them down to the point... one can almost taste it all. :P

Anyway, keep creating and don't let the lack of reviews put you off!

Huh, seriously... 9 reviews for over 60k words? Scandalous...
TheLycanthrope chapter 16 . 11/17/2007
By far one of the best stories of the genre. Good interaction, splendid characterisations, and entertaining the whole way through.

Keep up the awesomeness.
Cheshire chapter 14 . 11/2/2007
And off the heroes went... through a portal created by Grobnar... and they ended up a bit south to land near one lovely place which saw its world-saving hero ten years ago: The Area of Baldur's Gate. Or something like that.

This story is definitely unique. Danno had better make his intentions involving Neeshka or Nalia clear. Very clear. I wonder what Nalia will have to say, though the clues give me a few ideas. Obviously, Lord Parish is the not-so-powerful-or-wealthy ally Nalia has in the council. I hope the two of them can get rid of the treacherous Lady and Lord who, I think, funded the attack on Nalia.
Khellendrosiic chapter 12 . 10/22/2007
Good lord man this story is awesome. I've only gone through the game once so far but all your portrayals of the different characters seem to be right on. I feel a bit sorry for Ammon Jerro, but I suppose not everyone can be redeemed or some-such thing. I highly approve of the relationships you put together as well as Casivir learning to not be such a stuck-up ass. I never used him in the game because he was so annoying that way.

The use of magic during sex is a hilariously novel idea. I wonder why I've never thought of that? Heh heh. Regardless, keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to the rest of this story.
Foxfire1 chapter 8 . 9/26/2007
This was absolutely delightful. Excellent mix of action and introspection, and I really like your characterization. It's hard to handle an ensemble that big without slipping into caricature or character-bashing on your least favorites, but I enjoyed your portrayals of all of them. (Though I would suggest cutting Sand's italic consumption by about a third.) Great humor as well - I had a serious case of the giggles when Danno decided to tell everyone *exactly* how he felt about them. I look very much forward to seeing more of this!
