Reviews for Whisper of the Cat
LunaAzul788 chapter 20 . 5/21/2018
How I have longed to read a story revolving around the Baron and Baroness. You have done such a wonderful job combining two of Studio Ghibli's well-loved films. The concept was terrific and each character was given quite enough depth and characterisation. Though there are a few mishaps, and some parts that the story could have flourished without, there is nothing some tweaking and proofreading would not fix.

Again, a job well done.

This crossover is so wonderful! I love how you portrayed the characters, especially Muta! So in-character, being the grumpy and comical cat that he is. And also, the exhilarating adventure I experienced while reading this! *Gives you a finger gun* You're the best!
WyldClaw chapter 1 . 3/31/2016

TheCynicalOptimist-12 chapter 20 . 6/14/2014
This might seem weird but my favorite character, besides Baron is Muta. He's the comic relief, what's not to love about comic reliefs? I love find-the-reference with your stories! Grave of the Fireflies made me cry so hard when I first watched it. From pure sadness. Not from how beautiful it was or fear (-cough-Titanic-cough-) but from the horrors. Well it's wonderful that Baron and Louise found each other at last mad everyone got a happy ending, or most (: now onto your Nausicaa, Mononoke, and Howl story. Oh and happy early birthday!
Alex chapter 2 . 5/24/2014
Actually you are wrong because Haru told Baron that she liked him when she was back in human form
Sarah Jhons chapter 20 . 4/18/2014

Canada Cowboy chapter 20 . 2/1/2014
Finally, I managed to finish this story. It is a great piece of work and you were very creative in getting these things on the page. Let's go through this half and see what I spotted.

First, the notion of an "uncivilized" cat clan in the Cat Kingdom is very refreshing. It goes to show that racism and discrimination are not just phenomenon in the human world, but in the cat world as well. painting the former Cat King as some type of war criminal (or at least his ancestors were) is a new twist, and certainly brings a darker side to an almost comic relief individual in The Cat Returns. Again, this is very original of you to think of it that way.

Another interesting tidbit is the way you added so many ways to dealing with relationships in the fic. Shizuku and Seiji is, of course, the main pairing, and their interactions are very interesting to watch. To have Seiji pace around while Shizuku was with the chief, only to have Muta and Haru force the ring and the marriage proposal out of him is great. Baron and Louise are also great in how protective he is of her, after losing her for so many years. I was a little surprised that you didn't have Seiji propose to Shizuku in front of everyone (Baron, Louise, Muta, Toto, Lune, etc.), because this seems to be a very close group now. Either way, it was very well done.

I did notice all the other Ghibli references you threw in there, and it's really amazing how many you managed to list off. I also liked this epilogue where you kind of wrapped everything up and told us where everyone was. It's funny how Shizuku and Seiji ended up knowing the disadvantages of marriage and parenthood when they had to take care of kids, and how Haru's husband was shocked when he found out about the Cat Bureau. I would love to see a sequel where the gang reunites and se what new adventure Baron and Louise are up to.

Aside from some spelling and grammar errors, this story is very enjoyable. Well done.
Canada Cowboy chapter 10 . 1/31/2014
Only managed to get halfway through this story, but I say it's a wonderful idea. Whisper of the Heart is one of my favourite films, and I always find it disappointing that Shizuku and Seiji weren't even mentioned in The Cat Returns. So to have the characters of the 2 films meet each other is a new twist.

I really like how you focused on developing relationships between characters of the shows, while still maintaining their original goals. Seiji and Shizuku are undoubtedly in love, and both have goals in their lives that they intend to meet. Haru is a girl lacking in confidence, but now she's a lot surer of herself. These 3 characters all had their lives changed by Baron, who directly (for Haru) or indirectly (for Shizuku and Seiji) assisted them in proceeding with their lives. Now to have these characters help Baron by bringing back his lost love, I think it's a good way to make this come full circle.

This leads to another thing I like, which is how everything seems to go back to Baron, who spent so much time helping others that he forgot to help himself. While Shizuku is getting her book published and Seiji is on his way to becoming a great violin-maker, Baron is still so focused on aiding others. It's unfortunate that in The Cat Returns, Louise was written out of the story and they have what I think is an unfortunate pairing of Baron/Haru. Having Baron/Louise seems to be more realistic in that it follows the canon set down from the prequel.

Something that I think you can work on is describing these characters better. I'm under the impression that, being 4 years later, Shizuku and Seiji are now older and ready to graduate from high school. How are their ages compared to Haru's? Likewise, when Shizuku and her sister were in New York for the publication, how did they find some of the sights and sounds? Describing those can be more helpful in putting the writer in the shoes of these characters so that the fic can be an overall more enjoyable experience.

I will finish the other half and give you my assessment soon. But so far, it's a pretty good fic.
