Guidelines:

it true to the characters as written by Stoppard?

the dialog witty?

the extract have humor?

it true to the source text?

does it add to the original?

Very entertaining piece, you have put a lot into a short entry. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern seem much as they were in the play, going on in a never ending round of puzzlement about their place in the world. The emphasis on words is just how I remember them talking on stage (“Well, not for ever, I suppose …”)

Yes it’s witty. The metaphor of the cereal goes well is made the most of: “Do you want any Life?” etc.

Definitely humorous. I was smiling from the first line.

It’s not true to the source text in that it’s taking us out of Hamlet to the modern world whereLife cereal exists, and I think the play stayed completely in the “era” of Hamlet. But in style of dialog and characterization of R and G, it’s very true to source, including the brief intrusion of the main characters from Hamlet and Ros. and Guild’s confusion. The part that took me away from the original a little was the epilogue …

Bringing the modern metaphor of Life cereal into Ros. and Guild. are Dead was interesting, the dialog was so true to the general sense of the play that I didn’t find the modernization jarring. You can imagine them haranging together on through the years… This piece adds a sense of timelessness to the characters and their indecision that we can take and imagine in any era. Very enjoyable!

A clever and amusing parody. "James" seems to have missed the point entirely, especially since Hamlet DOES tell Rosencrantz that he is a sponge-and that's your punchline!

James chapter 1 . 7/15/2007
This is a woeful piece of writing. Despite your noble efforts this is not absurd. It does not address the quandry that is human existence, instead it explores the banality of cereal (a very reluctant metaphor)as a philosophical system.

I don't mean to offend you. I just don't think that your rumination on this topic is true to stoppards play or intentions. And Hamlet should NEVER say any line that is not in Hamlet. It is all very well to play the 'cute' card, hell, i could tell you that fanfiction is the point where reality meets fiction and the two are fused, but which is which to start with, the old creater versus the product thing and i would be saying something immediately more inciteful.

say for example, the title 'life in a box', wrong. Death in a box yes, life equals death, wrong. Anyway, you'll probably never read this, and it won't matter, but feel free to email me to discuss this...and the absurd in general.

Much respect, James.
