Gotta say though:

Having a father who only gives you what it suits him to give, who's sitting right there while you tell him what you'd like but who then never listens to it...is emotionally worse than not having a father.

If you don't have a father, your father would've done loving things for you if he could've; he never chose not to. If you do have a father who sends such a strong message of not loving you, not even noticing who you are...that's worse.

There's a reason Kushner's Why Bad Things Happen to Good People concluded that God's not always *able* to prevent those bad things and that's why. "Father loves me but just isn't able to be here" (due to being dead or insane or w/e) is much better than "Father's right here and blatantly doesn't even notice I'm a person let alone love me."

Similarly, it's understandable that Severus might see Harry's memories of the Dursleys' treatment and think they're the same as his own poverty-stricken childhood, but here again, most people would agree that the Dursleys' ability to give a new item the child asked for (as they do with Dudley) and choice to give Harry gifts like a single coin, a single sock, etc. is worse than *either* if all they could afford was a single coin (as canon suggests might've been true of Severus' parents) *or* if they just gave him nothing at all. A gift that's deliberately chosen to be not what you wanted is the worst.

I can see a kid in Draco's situation "agreeing" that Neville's parent situation is "worse" just to avoid conflict, but I can't see him really believing it, especially not when repeatedly "teased" about it. When it comes to parental love, Neville is not worse off than Draco. He's better off.

Thank you so much for this story. It is excellent. I think this is my favorite version of Snape ever.
