Pia Bartolini chapter 9 . 10/2/2018
So on reading through this chapter I think I see where the issues are, namely that most of the fan base reading these stories isn’t familiar enough with PGSM that you can keep the backstory or motivations too mysterious and have everyone follow. Like, Minako and the abuse situation needs to be alluded to BEFORE she begins hating on Usagi for her happy family, or she looks petty instead of sympathetic.

Additionally, it needs to be super clear who does and doesn’t know who the princess is, early on, and WHY. In chapters 3-7-ish, that was genuinely confusing. I’m still not clear if Artemis knows. Rei does, Minako does, Ami seems not to and Kunzite... might? Not? He remembers Minako as Venus but doesn’t seem to know she isn’t the actual princess instead of a decoy? Do you see where this comes off as confusing, especially in a VERY complex narrative over multiple years of updates? I am a pretty careful reader and just did it in a binge and I’m still a bit confused. A recap at the beginning of each chapter if there is more than a year between updates would also be super helpful to getting readers back up to speed when they get a nice inbox notification for an update :)

The relationships and divisions and resentments are definitely becoming more clear now, especially with Artemis and Minako, and Rei to a lesser extent. The conflict inside Usagi is also appearing to shift from what the original focus appeared to be but I don’t object - the reveal to Ami’s mother and Usagi’s as well, along with Grandpa Hino’s suspicions being discussed, were extremely well done. My curiosity with Rei’s mother’s death was also piqued.

There are still a ton of moving parts but the fact that Metallia can only exert influence in her Chaos and not really control, per se, is coming across loud and clear. That, along with the binding senshi love and promises and the misdirected hatred by both the Shittenou AND Rei on to the queen and princess is a really interesting plot point that you could do a ton with. But it definitely feels like it has turned into Rei and Minako’s story more than Usagi and Mamoru’s, which I also wasn’t expecting. It’s not bad, just an interesting shift in the narrative focus. Lots of good things going on here and I’m really thrilled to see what the next update brings!
Pia Bartolini chapter 8 . 10/1/2018
Well I don’t know what you were apologizing for. The plot twist was one I didn’t see coming and it was brilliant. I LOVED it. Both injuring Usagi AND capturing and turning Rei. It deals with two major vulnerabilities of the team and rest explores and exposes some of those weaknesses, paralleling the past with the present.

The reveal to Ami’s mother was handled beautifully too.

I thought the deep dive into Kunzite was just bonus awesome, how Metallia twisted and lied and planted the seeds that didn’t even make a brute force possession needed. Or how Rei, herself, started the problem with Jadeite but Beryl and Metallia used that as their initial vector in. So very believable. And understandable. You made these weaknesses very empathetic for the reader, even with the generals, and I love it. I couldn’t have asked for a better twist!

I mean okay, I’m cringing for Usagi and all her injuries. But even that was perfectly played. She tried so hard to balance protecting Rei and sacrificing herself. She tried to make the stronger play and couldn’t. And when Rei did what she had to do Usagi was taken advantage of anyway. It was just... ugh. Perfectly done. I’m so excited for more. And really not sure which story I love more now - this is just so DIFFERENT than ADABN. I think that one is sweeter and more relatable but this is so dark and involved and gripping. I ADORE THEM BOTH TO LITTLE BITS!
Pia Bartolini chapter 7 . 9/30/2018
Minako has come off very confusingly, to be honest. For a few chapters it was hard to tell whether she knew she wasn’t actually Serenity, if Artemis knows, or if either understands who Usagi actually is and are keeping it from her maliciously, to protect her, or out of ignorance. That confusion has made parsing their motives particularly tricky. And the petulance vacillating with the angst and then the weird bursts of warmth have been tough to swallow. But Minako in this really isn’t likable at all - she reads as selfish, cagey, angry, jealous, bitter, and cold. The times she comes across as warmer and more friendly I have tended to second guess as her possibly trying to work an angle because it seems inconsistent with her character thus far. That’s just my reading of it... I could be way off base but that’s how she comes across to me. Her anger at her role is understandable, to an extent. But she really goes beyond in how badly she treats everyone, but Usagi in particular. And that’s made whether she knows Usagi is actually Serenity or not even more confusing to ascertain - if Minako is actually aware, she has a funny way of showing respect or warmth or dedication. Those are just my thoughts thus far with regard to the authors note on this chapter.

The backstory was fantastic, I loved the depth and the back and forth of emotions it evoked in each character. The complexity and intricacy really blows me away, especially as each girl (and Mamo!) try to balance out happy memories with the loss they know has come and gone, or with a duty they feel they never wanted and aren’t sure how they ever made peace with. And then Usagi, who is still so utterly in the dark. That worries me as this advances and we see Kunzite scheming. It’s going nowhere good and I’m excited to see this all blow up in the worst possible way, like the crazy fan girl I am ;). I get the feeling Mamoru is going to regret refusing to pursue any memories of Serenity until it is too late...
Pia Bartolini chapter 5 . 9/30/2018
A sweet ending to a rough chapter. They really do need to talk about the Minako elephant in the room, but I hope her comment to Artemis earlier was a turning point away from bitch mode and remembering her own long buried duties toward the team and her princess, even though they’re obviously confused as to who the princess is and not just lying to everyone intentionally. MEEEESS!
Pia Bartolini chapter 4 . 9/30/2018
Okay, Minako has officially crossed the line into Trollop territory. What horrible behavior, even coming from a place of jealousy that is unusually petty and cold.

I didn’t expect the twist with the generals at all, that was very clever of them to put together the pieces and track Rei down. This is all going to go badly but I’m excited to see what sort of things shake out of this powder keg. You just keep setting up more dominoes for the inevitable crash and I’m simultaneously thrilled and cringing XD
Pia Bartolini chapter 3 . 9/29/2018
Is it bad that I’m beginning to want to strangle Minako just a tad!? I have that vibe with almost every PGSM characterization of her, though XD. I love how skeptical and angry everyone is and how it doesn’t jive with their instinct and the lack of memories, the frustration in this chapter was palpable and I’m expecting that won’t improve in the next one. Another bang up excellent job!
Pia Bartolini chapter 2 . 9/29/2018
Oh this is all going so painfully badly! And reminding me of how much I hated the deception regarding Minako and Usagi and the whole decoy princess even in the series. It seemed needlessly cruel, and you’re really exploring all the reasons why in full and gory emotional detail. I LOVE IT!
Pia Bartolini chapter 1 . 9/29/2018
Oh wow! Whatever format changes were yielded with the switch from OHC to nanowrimo it agrees with you. This played to every one of your strengths and was what I was hoping for and then some. The contrast between the sweetness and trepidation, the joy and depression, contentment and envy, and the storms raging back and forth inside Usagi she desperately is trying to hide from everyone with varying amounts of success was fantastic.

The annoyance of the girls with the intensity or the enthrallment between Mamo and Usa was ask pitch perfect, balanced with their friendship and camaraderie. The entire thing felt like a teetering top that began to wobble more and more as the chapter progressed until it crashed there at the end. I knew you could do so much from the previous story’s premise, but the deep dive you began here was still so much better than I expected. WOW.
TropicalRemix chapter 7 . 9/20/2018
you keep spelling Zoicite's name wrong
Roxypockets1 chapter 1 . 1/8/2018
Oh my goodness, this is amazing! I love your unique perspective and twists on the story. I love evil Mars and Kunzite and their character development. Also, the characterization of the senshi’s parents is spectacular. I also love your Minako. Poor Mina-chan, she’s gone through so much, almost entirely alone, and in a dysfunctional home. Her story is so tragic. I hope she can feel whole and valued as a person, not just a Senshi. I know you’re a busy person, being a mother and raising a family but I hope someday you’ll come back to this story when you can. Good luck with everything and thank you for your hard work!
