To the doppelganger, that is really true. There are people who did find there twin not by blood but look a like and even sometimes did like same or some things - with some only some little changes had to be done like hair colour or length or the skin was a bit darker but it was really interesting when I once did read abut this -

and a handfull grain? A horse can eats 1-4kg hay alone with each feeding in morning midday and afternoon ...so 500kg horse gets around max 2.5kg hay a meal and a working horse eats grain of 0,5-2kg without problem then too to keep body and energy to work on...
Here some better number : they need at least to eat 1,5-2/-2,5% of there bodyweight in dry forage per day, depending on how much work you do with them. It needs at least 0,5% to maintain a healthy digestive system. So a athletic horse that is ridden 5-6 day a week will need higher fat and protein, so 2ibs of dry food per 100ibs of horse per day... feeding it over two-three times a day. When you go with flakes of hay . normal horses get 3-6flakes of hay fluffed up and grain in morning and evening when worked. A 1000pound horse can eat 10-20pound of hay each day.
When you go from only grazing horse then it can eat on good pasture for around 17h to get enough food up to 20pound /11,3kg gras a day.

One mistake I think I did see... you did say she strapped the sword and provision bag and such on the mares rear...
... And then put the saddle on her back... I don't think the horse could move like this ;)
When you got a hand horse and only walk it while traveling you would put the packs and bags on a special harness type for saddle bags on her back., so she can carry more weighty load easy.. but it all on her rear she could not move well -

First blanket/saddle sheet (as better when traveling long time), then saddle then possible harness as most horses use in old times to keep saddle and the backpack in place ...and the saddle bag and packs will be stepped to the saddle ;D

And all the galopping and running around ...traveling gait is trot or walk. ..some more rare breeds got special gait tolt/tilt or pace for traveling.
So with all the running around and not enough rest to eat ...the mare should be done for in a week. Trail and endurance rider walk walk walk and trot or handwalk partly of the way there horse...when riding for days or weeks every 40-60min most will do short rest 15-25 to let horse eat gras and only go for 6h...so they get enough food on the way already and are food to go on as not to tirred ...horses eat more or less on the walk to when enough green. ...to get water is also a needed thing...And without atleast a little warm up and some cool down she would get trouble with her legs and back real fast..
...most rider in old times and still some today just used a horse as fast or slow as possible and some did not take care or rest enough, but did go to next town or station with a stable , then changed it to a fresh one and the old one would get rest for some days and would be feed up again...

But yes kagome may do this already and you just did not write it as it would take to much time away from the story.

Jomon period horses where known but not really used ...first when horses from continent where introduced in 4th century , they where first mentioned by kojiki and nihon shoki in battle use...so why not the horse is alright , and who knows maybe demon did use horses. ;)

I think naraku has a body like this because of his evil ways? All this miasma and hitting his minions and creating new fake bodys or minions and scheming must be the trick to have this body while sitting around most of the time on his lazy behind.

So I really hope this was a one time thing ...that he sees thing a bit more clearly ...that he will keep away rill his head is mire clear ...or that kagome at least learns to give back as good as she gets...she has power... and he feels some pain too...and then learns not to act like mindless beast.
