This oneshot is so perfect. Really. I bawled so hard the first time I read it, and I keep coming back and reading it again. I have only read three to four stories on this site more than once.
You write the emotions beautifully. I love that Dean cries, I love that they joke together, I love that they're both in pain, but they're both trying to be brave for each other.

Their characterization is done really well.

I think my favorite part of this story is the POV...I think that what you did is incredibly fitting for this story. It's obvious throughout that they're dying, that they're in pain...they can't focus, it's hard to know what's going on. You SHOW that. Things like Sam realizing that "Dean's hand was gone"..."he was alone"...the drops of wetness falling on Sam, that he can only identify as not being blood.
You really illustrate the confusion and the shortsightedness, and it so adds to the authenticity. I think a combination of these things are what makes it such an emotional story; you set us in the mine shaft with Sam and Dean, we don't have to imagine the situation for ourselves, because you describe it so clearly. It makes it a very difficult, emotional read. Which is perfect.

GAH. I was linked here some another site, so I didn't see the description and therefore didn't know it was a deathfic, so it was all the more breath-stealingly sad in the end... But, of course, as others have said, really, really beautiful. I love the poem reference, and the dying flame, and this brought tears to my eyes and that doesn't happen very often.
I also love that they don't really talk about anything- I mean, not about things they wish they could have done, or things they have done, or people they would have liked to say goodbye too- no, they talked about Lassie. I think it was just really sweet and natural. And the repetition of "It's okay," and ohmygoodness I'm gonna go cry now.

Love the Dylan Thomas overtones here.
