I am more than slightly surprised as a modern fic is actually unappealing to me. However your little snippet had me so curious I had to give it a try. I am mightily impressed. Your extensive knowledge of positions, country, and even military TAC is surprising. I'm by no means an expert but given I am the daughter of a father who does similar work I am surprised by the knowledge and yet without over doing it - which is so easy. It makes me curious as to what you do.
You blended the stories and characters seemlessly and (yet with enough distinctive creativity of your own) to not only do justice to the third installment but the entore series. Especially with the flashbacks.

I know this is an old story and probably far off your radar but I would be remiss in not telling you I enjoyed it.

Nice AU! Still recognizably the same story but set in a different world... you've done an amazing job of translating each aspect of Tortall into our world. THe only thing that doesn't quite fit is Daine's ability to communicate with animals, but well, there was no way around that. The characters are still the characters and vetkin hilarity. Loved it.
