DAMN...

This story is EXACTLY the reason that I’ve always enjoyed AUs; when faced with such significant differences from canon as those presented here- to the extent that the gang haven’t even come together in this reality-, it’s fascinating to see how they relate to each other compared to how they would have bonded originally.

Ross and Rachel’s dejection and frustration in their current relationships in the opening chapters is very well-expressed, and while I can’t ENTIRELY follow the suddenness of their decision to begin their affair- I could see why they would want one; I’m just a bit ambiguous about them diving into one with people they haven’t seen for years-, things develop in an easily believable manner after the fact.

Their mutual need for each other is effectively counterbalanced by their initial unwillingness/inability to really accept or acknowledge how much the OTHER person needs THEM, which leads neatly into the moment when they are able to acknowledge that they need the other in their lives despite all the issues that might result...

To say nothing of the moment when they decide to take it slowly rather than just dive into another relationship, of course; it might have been easier for them to go straight from one relationship to another, but, as you highlighted, they needed to learn that they could stand on their own rather than being totally dependent on another person for their own happiness (Even as they recognise that Rachel brings that something special to the group that they’d originally lacked).

And as for that epilogue...

Beautiful, to say the least; the group have come together at last, and they even have Emma on her way as Ross and Rachel settle into their new lives together as more rounded people than they ever managed to be even in canon (Ross had his various Carol-inspired intimacy issues, as an example).
