Heartbreaking! Seriously, a sucker-punch from start-to-finish.

You did a great job on capturing the boys' voices! I love Sam sliding into bed with Dean at the end; it's usually the other way 'round (at least in the fics I've read), and it's nice to see the reversal. I love this little bit of insight into Dean's mind: "Maybe it's because he had the luxury of being angry with the man-after all, Dean was his primary care giver, not John. Dean didn't have a choice but to rationalize away anything wrong his father did. He was the only thing that stood between him and the big bad world. Sam had Dean." I hadn't really thought about that before. I got a good laugh out of Sam's line about Granny and Jed being lumped in with the Benders and Dean's line about kindred with cattle. Goof job!

I liked it. Dean's fears and protectiveness and how Sam sees it all. The end was also kinda sweet.

I've gotta admit, I'm confused. Here, you say: “Yeah-Dad busted my ass for that one.”

Which I took to mean, particularly with the other comments, that Dean ended up getting his ass beat over Sam's stupid stunt.

But then: "In reality, John may never have physically abused his oldest son" (which sort of implies that maybe he did physically abuse Sam, which I don't think you were going for); anyway I suppose the term "abuse" means different things to different people, but it seems to contradict my previous understanding of the phrase "Dad busted my ass". *Is sorry, but hopes for an explaination.*

“I don’t know. I’m a little too big to turn over his knee now .”

“He wouldn’t do anything,” Sam said with confidence.

Dean raised an eyebrow.

“Because I’m too big for him to sit in a corner now.”

Okay, now I'm really confused. So, by "Dad busted my ass" Dean's referring to a regular over the knee spanking? Also, if that's the case, does that mean Papa Winchester beat Dean but not Sam?

I loved this, and felt so bad for both boys (both in the present and in the past).

Wow, what a great insight into all three Winchesters. Great story, great writing, brilliant. And not too mention cute to boot.

That was great, really cute. I love Dean's memories and how they connect to what just happened.
