Reviews for The Rose and the Nightingale
LaLadyCavalier chapter 22 . 6/19
I always find myself coming back to this story. Lol, about half my favorite fics are unfinished, like a tradition. EVEN SO! This is one of the best poto fics I have ever read, and it is a treasure whether or not we have the last chapter! Doesn't make it any less good or enjoyable to read. I hope you are okay and happy, and even if you never come back to this story, let alone the comments, I hope you remember it fondly and are as pleased with it as you should be!

I am loving this story! It’s a unique take on the phantom with an interesting twist. PLEASE write more quickly! I need to know what happens.
Lady Cookie chapter 22 . 3/3/2018
This is the most beautiful fan fiction I've ever read wth just one teeny tiny flaw... It's not complete! It's just two or three chapters, do complete them.. This story is far too great to be abandoned like this, for almost 9 years! Please update asap. Let me finish this review by quoting our beloved Erik, "You alone can make my song take flight, help me make the Music of the Night" (right now I feel like saying "It's over now the Music of the Night", but anyway) Congratulations on writing such a wonderful story, and do complete it asap. Thanks a lot

With this story, I will both die happy and never be satisfied for as long as I live.
Twenty-three is the magic number...

MeyLyss chapter 22 . 2/9/2017
You said there will be only 2 or 3 chapters left. Finish it, you lazy girl!
Child of Dreams chapter 20 . 2/12/2016
So...one of them has to love the other enough to sacrifice their life for them?
CrushedRosePetals chapter 22 . 1/4/2016
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!? How could you abandon your poor readers like this?
BlueWinterRoses chapter 22 . 12/17/2015
This is...wow. First off, let me just express my gratitude to you for posting this wonderful work of fanfiction. As a proud obsessor of everything that is Phantom of the Opera, such a gem like this is one I will treasure always. I rather love the way Christine is written here; most seem to mistakenly view her as a dim and an indecisive little twit, but I always saw a young woman forced to grow up due to strenuous circumstances beyond her control. And your Christine portrays this interpretation of mine to the letter, as she is forced to become more assertive as time passes and her situation becomes more dire. There are times, though, where I have felt like she cries too much, or she could be a little tougher, but I trust this is all a part of your magnificent character development.
As for Erik? I feel you've managed to capture that mesmerizing aura he seems to carry, but beneath it all there is a truly tortured soul, and you've added just the right touch of insanity to him. While many would love to coddle and sooth him, Erik is a very broken man, and even Christine's love cannot fully change him.
The fantasy aspects are written so beautifully, and you have such a poetic style of writing that makes everything just flow so well. I do wonder how the rest of this universe views magic, though. Christine's aunt seems to think it is a thing of the devil because she's catholic, so does that mean it's common for people to be aware of it or to possess it? Most likely I just answered my own question, but I was just curious if outside of Persia magic is something known to everyone, or just a chosen few, as Madame Giry and even the dim-witted opera managers appear to be aware of it.
Speaking of Persia, the chapters taking place there have to be my favorite. It was the same in the Kay novel, and it's the same here. There's something just so other worldly about it, and this being arguably the darkest time of Erik's life, it's an interesting change to have him meet Christine there.
Oh, and Ayesha is a wonderful addition. She doesn't feel unnecessary at all, and I quite enjoy Erik's little feline friend. That mutual jealously Christine and her had for each other in the Kay novel was entertaining, but here it feels as if it's written much better due to the friendship the two eventually form.
Also, I can see the Miyazaki inspiration that influences this story. While I am fond of "Spirited Away," I do have to admit "Howl's Moving Castle," was never one of my absolute favorites, but I do agree these movies have a certain pull to them that just sucks you into their world. It's something Miyazaki does well in his films, and it is also something I feel you've done beautifully here.
Alas, I am running out of things to say, so perhaps it would be best to wrap up this review. I noticed you haven't updated in a while, and while I understand that lovely little thing called life has a tendency to happen, I do hope you have found some way to keep writing. Not just this story, but in some shape or form, because you certainly have a talent that does not deserve to be wasted.
Oh, and just one more thing. I noticed you mentioned in one chapter you were hoping to publish this somehow, but you were worried about having drawn too much from Kay's novel. Have you by chance ever heard of this thing called Kindleword? Apparently they publish your fanfiction for you, and they will pay you royalties. I don't know how you feel about that, or how much control you'd be allowed to have over the story. I know the author L.J. Smith is using it so she can write for her "Vampire Diaries" series since she unfortunately lost the rights to it long ago. Since it would be fanfiction of a fanfiction, I wouldn't imagine there'd be too many problems from having drawn from Kay's work, but then again, you might not be interested in this, so what do I know?
Anyway, I wish you all the best on any future projects, and since it's that time of year, a happy holidays!
